Clemmons was founded in 1851 by John and Anna Clemmons as a log cabin on the banks of the Catawba River. The Clemmons family would continue to live in the community until 1915, when they moved to Asheville. In 1865, Clemmons became one of the first communities in North Carolina to enroll in the State School system. By 1888, Clemmons had become an important commercial center with a variety of businesses including a sawmill and gristmill, a grocery store, and two churches. The community experienced several name changes throughout its history including Clear Springs (1892), Calvary Heights (1906), and finally Clemmons Landing (1945). The most significant event that occurred during the early years of Clemmons was the arrival of John Fenton Cobb in 1901. Cobb was a prominent landowner and developer who helped contribute to both the growth of Clemmons and North Carolina's statehood movement. Cobb is credited with helping create what is now known as downtownClemmons while also financing many aspects of its development such as its initial courthouse building which still stands today.
