Clemmons, North Carolina is a small town in the state of North Carolina. It is located on the Yadkin River and has a population of around 950 people. Clemmons was founded in 1837 by John A. Clemmons and his wife Lucy. The Clemmons family originally came from Pennsylvania. The Clemmons’ were farmers with crops and cattle until they moved to North Carolina in 1837. In 1865, John A. Clemmon donated land to build a school in honor of his father-in-law, Colonel Nathaniel Harnett, Jr., who had served as Governor of North Carolina from 1863 to 1865. The first school building was built on the site in 1867 and it was used until 1971 when it was replaced by the current building which stands today onclevelandallee across from Park Middle School. The town has been home to many businesses over the years such as Wernham Printing Company (now part of Sprinkle Media), First Baptist Church, Fayetteville Savings Bank, and United Methodist Church which are still active today. There are also several historical homes still standing including Mrs. Jethro Wernham’s house which is now part of Park Middle School; Mr. & Mrs.'s Store; Drury’s Tavern; Robert Epps House; and others that can be found throughout town center or at nearby property boundary streetsides). The town was renamed to honor General Hugh McCulloch, who fought in the American Revolution. In 1907, the town had an increase in its population to over 500 people when it annexed the neighboring community of Orangeburg. The population then decreased between 1910 and 1920 as most residents left for larger townships or rural areas within the state. Clemmons is located at 38°4′N 71°36′W / 38.9782 N 71.3282 W / 38; 4 according to USGS surveys taken in 1880, 1890, 1900, 1910, 1920; 72 according to GIS data from 1980-2010 The first permanent settler in what is now Clemmons was John Clemmon who arrived on horseback from Scotland about 1798. He erected a log cabin on land which he purchased from Indians near present day Garner County line. A few miles west of his cabin were other early settlers including James Cunningham (1799-1834), George Smith (1800-1846), David McDowell (1800-1849), and Archibald Campbell (1802-1873). In 1835 John Clemmon again came across land which he bought from the Cherokees east of present day Garner County line and established himself as one of North Carolina’s first farmers along main river valleys such as those through eastern Johnston County today where Mecklenburg stands today: “This place [Clemmons] being situated upon high ground having excellent water power all around it &c., opened up many rich veins of coal & iron orebearing rocks immediately adjoining it…. There are several large mills hereabouts”[1]. By 1840 more than twenty families lived here with farming constituting only 3% of local income[2]. John Denton purchased some land adjacent toclemossaat auction block number 2 lots 6&7 for $725 per acre on November 15th 1852[3]. This purchase marks one potential turning point for this area as it would become key infrastructure for future growth spurring new business ventures such as farm raising ranching heavy industry with access to nearby markets while providing much needed employment during that time period[4]. Clemmons was founded in 1792 by John Clemmons and his wife, Martha. The original home of the Clemmons family is still standing and is currently used as a museum. In 1827, the town received its first post office, which was located at the corner of West Main Street and Second Avenue. The town continued to grow until it had a population of over 1,000 people in 1868. In 1904, Clemmons became the seat of government for Hardin County.
