Clemmons is a small town located in the eastern part of North Carolina. The population was 7,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lexington-Fayette County, Kentucky Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1817 by John and Martha Clemmons as a trading post on James River. When the river flooded in 1824, they were forced to move their business to nearby Georgetown. In 1827, they erected a log cabin on what is now Washington Street and started to sell goods from their store. They continued to operate their store until 1830, when they moved again, this time to what is now Market Place. In 1838, they built a gristmill on present day Court House Road and began to produce flour for local markets. In 1840, they built another mill on South Main Street which continued production until 1862 when it burned down. In 1865, John Clemmons donated land for the first school in Clemmons and his wife taught there until 1888; after that year it was operated by subscription schools until 1925 when state funding became available for public education in North Carolina. The first high school closed in 1924; however, enrollment continued to grow so that by 1930 there were six high schools inClemmons with over 4200 students each! A new high school was opened in 2006 and went through major renovations including an addition of an activity hall/library which doubled as its gymnasium; this renovation also included installation of new roofs and walls around all four buildings which made them earthquake resistant! The old courthouse building remains serving as the town library today! Clemmons has been home to many notable people throughout its history: Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt lived here from 1922-1929 before moving uptown for two years while her son Franklin D Roosevelt attended Harvard University; she then returned home permanently thereafter Mr./Ms.(first name only) Haley reside here from 1978-1987 while raising their three children (Stephanie Lynn Haley born1981 & Nicholas Timothy Haley born1983 & Matthew David Haley born1986) current Mayor (2008-present)
