Concord, North Carolina is a town in Buncombe County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 10,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Asheville–Buncombe Metropolitan Statistical Area. Concord was founded by General John Brown in 1811 as a trading post on the Yadkin River between what are now Cherokee and Randolph counties. The area that became Concord was first inhabited by the Lenape Native Americans who were also its founders. The town began to grow rapidly during the American Revolution because of its strategic location on both sides of the Yadkin River. In 1775, Concordis Battle of Alamance resulted in a British victory over Continental Army forces under General George Washington at Alamance Hill. In 1778, when Patriots burned down the British Station at white Sulpher (now known as Rockingham), Concord's growth continued apace with plans to build a new station nearby on land donated by James Caldwell and others in retaliation for this act of defiance against British rule. This new station would be called New Bern after Colonel James Caldwell's settlement near present-day Raleigh. In 1800, Newton Dyer organized what is now Buncombe County into three parts: Western Buncombe, Eastern Buncombe and Haywood Counties were named for their respective landowners; McDowell County (later Graham County) formed from Central Dobbs Valley; and Morehead City was created from eastern Johnston County including much of downtown Asheville). On March 1, 1801 Hunter Blair established an independent government for each county within Buncombe County with Huntingdon as its capital city renamed Cumberland after King George III's favorite general and governor of Virginia at that time – though Cumberland never regained its status as an independent country until 1861 when it seceded from North Carolina to become Confederate States of America. On December 14th, 1848 voters in western Haywood Parish approved incorporation into consolidated Asheboro but only if all residents agreed to raise taxes 3% per year starting January 1st 1850 – something which they did not do In November 1865 Asheboro absorbed most of Harnettville leaving little evidence remaining beyond some pre-existing homes dating back to before Sumter War days (see History Lesson: Harnettville) On July 15th 1860 Campbells Creek Dam burst resulting in flash flooding across much of western Buncombecounty gouging out creeksand filling up small ponds making life very difficult for many people living along those creek channels even today . Geologically speaking there have been several major earthquakes throughout much or central NC occurring suddenly without warning over several centuries followed usually by weeks or months periods during which absolutely no damage occurs vowing always more powerful quakes such as this one should any happen again soon! These events have caused extensive damage plus loss/losses due to displacement etc.– great fears among everyday people about possible future disasters! Asheboro had done nothing wrong other than trying hard enough like everyone else during these tough times!
