Concord was founded in 1838 and named for the Dutch village of Convent-A-Go-go which had been evacuated during the American Revolution. The first store in Concord opened in 1839. In 1865, the Manchester Road Bridge was built over the Catawba River and made possible by a donation from Samuel J. Underwood, who also donated land to make it possible for people to drive to work on their farms south of town. The bridge became known as the "Underwood Bridge." The first high school in Concord opened in 1907. In 1916, a new elementary schoolwas built and named for Judge John Witherspoon Goodwin who had been born in Concord but died years earlier there while serving as a United States District Court justice. In 1938, Concord received its own hospital which became known as North Carolina Hospital later that year after it merged with Durham Regional Medical Center (later Duke University Medical Center). In 1951, Consolidated Broadcasting System began broadcasting from what is now called 102nd Street East across from the old Congregational Church on Veteran's Boulevard in downtown Concord. At that time WCNC (NBC) programming was available through cablevision subscribers only In 1978-79 an effort led by Mayor Dutch Shultz to remove all trees along Veterans Boulevard between 103rd Street East and Interstate 75 resulted in much ire from residents who felt they were being forced to sacrifice nature for economic development After several months of negotiations Shultz announced that he would not pursue this plan due to budget constraints - until later when he allowed construction of I-75 east of Veterans Boulevard to continue unimpeded . Concurrently two new high schools were opened; Randolph High School near I-75 and James Sutherlin Middle School just offVeterans Boulevard near 103rd StreetEast On February 11th 1984 James Sutherlin Middle School closed after 46 years of operation when its parent company withdrew funding necessary for renovation
