When the United States Air Force was first formed in 1947, its members were given a gift from the Dutch government. The gift was an airplane, and as it became more evident that the USAF could not rely on donations from individual countries, the USAF began to receive aircraft from NATO member nations. In 1967, North Carolina became one of the original states in the USAF. As a result of this relationship, North Carolina has contributed two A-10 Thunderbolt II fighter planes to the USAF. These planes are currently based at Seymour Johnson AFB in North Carolina and are used for air patrols and training purposes. As part ofAir Force Day festivities on November 11th each year (the date when Air Force aircraft become available to be gifted), all active duty USAF personnel are required to bring a gift or donation to their local community center. This includes both civilian residents as well as military members! During Air Force Day events throughout America, you will often find items such as clothes, toys, appliances, books etc., donated by local citizens. In Cornelius NC specifically there is an annual event called "The Gifting Game" which sees businesses give away small amounts of money towards purchasing various items for USAAF members stationed at Seymour Johnson AFB! The Cornelius Air Force Base gift history goes back to 1939. The air force base was founded in 1937 and the first Lt. Col. John A. "Jack" Hargrave became its first commander on July 1, 1939. In 1941, the air forcebase changed its name to Cornelius Army Air Field and it served as a training ground for AmericanAAF pilots during World War II. After the war, the airforcebase returned to civilian use and was renamed Cornelius Air Force Base on September 14, 1946. The base was also home to the NFL's Carolina Panthers from 1960-1975 before they were moved to San Francisco. On October 3, 1992,the base transferred ownership to the city of Cornelius and it has been part of city government since then.
Cornelius was founded in 1792 by Cornelius Vanderbilt and his family. The town is located in the northeastern part of North Carolina, about 24 miles from Raleigh. The population of Cornelius was estimated at 2,500 in 1800; it had grown to 10,000 by 1860. Today, the population of Cornelius is about 6,000. The town was named for General George Washington's father-in-law, Colonel James Cornwallis. It became a stop on the Underground Railroad and served as a refuge for runaway slaves during the American Civil War. In 1881, Mr. Vanderbilt donated land to create Park Avenue in honor of his wife and children (the first blocks were dedicated on November 15). Today Park Avenue runs through the heart of Cornelius and features many historic homes dating back to the 1800s.
