The Coast Guard gift history in Dunn, North Carolina began on December 1, 1922 when the first Coast Guard Station was established at Dunn. The station was located on the Dunn-Lenoir County line and staffed by three officers and twenty-eight enlisted men. The station was eventually closed on December 31, 1932 due to budget cuts. On January 1, 1935, the Coast Guard Station at Dunn reopened under the name of Coastal Security Forces Station because of increasing activity along the Carolina coast. In 1937, a new barracks and engine house were built at the station which served as headquarters for Coastal Security Forces until 1943 when Headquarters Commanding Unit became part of Coast Guard District New Bern. In 1951, Coastal Security Forces Station was renamed Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) after World War II Rear Admiral John W. McCain who chairmanship of NSWC during that time period. On July 3rd, 1970 during Hurricane Colleen an emergency beach landing ceremony took place at NSWC with over one hundred personnel from various agencies including State Patrol and United States Fire Department assisting in providing security for approximately 2 miles of shoreline between Lighthouse Point Marina and Purdy Beach. That same year another emergency beach landing ceremony took place at NSWC in conjunction with Camp Chase Daycare after damage caused by Hurricane Diane occurred near Fayetteville In 1992 after years of discussion it was decided that NSWC would be closed effective September 30th due to budgetary problems within the Corps however it reopened effective October 15th under the name Naval Surface Warfare Center - Patuxent River Division (NSC-PWRD). As part of NSC-PWRD duties include operation of four large riverine based warships; USS Decatur (DDG 71), USS George H Bush (DDG 56), USS Fitzgerald (FFG 66) and USS Holland (LPH 61). In addition to operational activities NSC also provides educational opportunities through several courses offered each year including recruit training course known as Basic Law Enforcement/MaritimeSecurity Operations indoctrination program known as Explosive Ordnance Disposal Bootcamp/Emergency Response Academy known as Search And Destroy/Anti Terrorism Warrior classknown as Law enforcement Leadership Development program which is open to all law enforcement Officers regardless gender or rank ...........
