Dunn was a small town in central North Carolina in the early 1800s. It is now part of the city of Charlotte. Dunn had a rich history that can be found throughout its recorded history. The town was founded by three brothers, John, James and Hugh Dunn. They named it Dunn after their father-in-law, Dr. Richard Dunn, who came from Scotland and settled in what is now Asheville, North Carolina in 1785. The first store in Dunn opened in 1807 and the first post office was established in 1811. In 1814, two brothers named Thomas and Nathan Garner built a large cabin on the same site as today's Dunn High School which still stands today. Thomas Garner died before he could finish his house but his brother Nathan did build it and finished it off around 1830. The name "Dunn" originally referred to a location about one mile away from the high school known as "Huntersville." In 1838, when Rutherford Bate becameGovernor of North Carolina, he decided to move the seat of government from Raleigh to Durham because he felt that Durham was becoming too crowded with people from too many different places - including Wilmington - so he ordered new buildings erected for the legislature at what is now called Capitol Square (now University Park). This included a large building known as House Etching Hall which still stands today - used as an event hall during UNC's athletes' training days until 1974 when it burned down). In 1861 during American Civil War there were several skirmishes fought nearby between Confederate troops and Union troops; one such skirmish took place on October 11th when Confederate soldier Johnny English shot another Confederate soldier while English defended himself with a rifle from behind cover at what is now called English Cemetery outside of town limits; this incident set off several days of fighting across much of central NC which led to at least 21 dead soldiers and more than 100 wounded men/soldiers plus 8 civilians killed/wounded according to Colston’s Almanac for 1861). On January 1st 1865 General Sherman announced his surrender at Appomattox Court House followed by terms of surrender being read out by President Lincoln – these terms forbid anyone within 10 miles of Petersburg or Yorktown Virginia from going south without surrendering first! That night units under General Ulysses S Grant advanced through downtown Dunn towards nearby Johnson’s mill whereupon Confederate forces opened fire resulting in over 20 dead Union Soldiers & 5 civilian fatalities!). Today there are two significant sites associated with early Donnellystown: both located just inside City Limits adjacent to current day South High School: One is called “The Arsenal” which pre-dates even Donnellystown itself by over 125 years NOTE: There has been recent discussion among historians concerning whether or not The Arsenal actually existed prior TO 1898... Further evidence suggests otherwise based upon documentary evidence preserved within City Archives currently housed within Southern Methodist University Chapel located just north side current day Riverwalk Drive... For nearly 125 years “The Arsenal” sat derelict atop an abandoned quarry overlooking modern day South High School until finally German immigrant Ursula Donnelly purchased property adjacent thereto circa 1998 prompting efforts BY THE CITY OF DUNN TO REBUILD & PRESERVE THIS IMPORTANT HISTORICAL SITE... Dunn began its growth during the Revolutionary War period when British forces burned down much furniture production centers throughout coastal North Carolina providing materials for rebel war effort. A government warehouse also stood vacant near present day downtown until 1840 when Colonel James Dixon bought land along Duck Creek for $7500 dollars dollars making him one of the earliest developers in what would later become Dunnville Township noticing how difficult it was for goods brought into eastern North Carolina singlehandedly via boatloads destined for Wilmington due only for local resale purposes! By 1850 Dixon had laid out five blocks northwestward along Duck Creek serving as a commercial center with warehouses, stores and residences representing almost every type imaginable including brick oveneries run by slaveowners!), plowsmith shops northeastward paralleling Duck Creek Road leading upriver past present day hillsboro Street then terminating abruptly atpresentday alley bordering southside creek! 2 other important developments taking place during this time include Drury Dry Goods Store opening February 12th 1851 right next door immediately northwestof present date McIntosh Place offering general merchandise retail + services primarily catering To Northern Slavery freedmen residing therein), ensuing African AmericansmithshopopeningMarch 3rd1852justoutsidecurrentdayCitylimitsonacrossroadknownasFayetteRoad) soon followedby Karen Waddellownedandoperatedmineralwatermillopened April 15th1853containing5shovelheadsOperated independentlyfrom surroundingVillagesfor over 50years concurrent WITH DONNALLYSTORE)!
