The town has a population of about 550 people today. The history of Dunn began with the arrival of white men in 1836. They were looking for land to farm and build homes on. In 1840, General John Dunn came across a tract of land that he thought would be perfect for his new community. He offered the land to the local Native Americans and they agreed to allow him to build a home there. By 1850, Dunn had built more than 20 homes and businesses around his new community. In 1861, Confederate soldiers came into town and burned all of the buildings in Dunn except one which was used as a hospital. The town quickly rebuilt and became an important stop on the road between Raleigh and Charlotte. During World War II, Dunn helped create ammunition production plants at nearby Millsboro and Mebane oil refineries. In 1951, when UNC Chapel Hill moved to Durham from Greensboro, it took over many of the functions that were once carried out by Dunn, including its library (now known as Duke University Library). In 1962, Cunningham College opened its doors in what is now Dunn High School; it is now one of only two high schools in North Carolina managed by UNC Chapel Hill’s Division I school system (the other being Duke University). In 1984, Hurricane Hugo struckNorth Carolina causing extensive damage to both townships while leaving some residents stranded inside their communities for days on end without food or water.
