In 1881, the North Carolina National Guard was established as a state militia by the act of parliament. The organization was named in honor of General James Longstreet, who had played a significant role in the American Civil War. The first unit to be formed was Company A at Hendersonville. This company consisted of only ten men and served for three years.
In 1885, Company B was organized and served for eight years. In 1898, Company C was organized and served for twelve years. In 1912, Company D was organized and served for thirteen years.
In 1922, the North Carolina National Guard consisted of 1,500 men under the command of Lieutenant Colonel John Goudreau. The regiment became brigadier general status on July 1st that year with Major General Lewis Wofford as its commanding officer. On October 15th 1932 Brigadier General Wofford died suddenly at his home in Raleigh after a long illness which had been going on since he took office two months earlier. Lieutenant Colonel John Fenton assumed command on October 16th and led the guard until his death in 1942. then Major General Glenn Wilkinson assumed command from Lieutenant Colonel Fenton on January 1st 1943 and led it until his death on May 9th 1945.
On May 8th 1946 Major General Charles Hance succeeded him as commander of the North Carolina National Guard.

Eden is a small town located in Gaston County, North Carolina. Eden was founded in 1892 by Reverend Ezra H. Goodrich and his wife, Alma M. Goodrich. The Goodrichs were the first white families to live in the town and they soon became involved in local political life. Rev. Goodrich served as mayor from 1912 until 1916 and he also helped to found the Eden Republican Party. In 1922, Reverend Goodrich donated land to the town for a high school which was built on what is now First Baptist Church Road. The first principal of Eden High School was Mrs. Mildred Averill who served from 1926 until her retirement in 1972. Mrs. Averill's successor, Dr. Alice Jepson, presided over Eden High School until her retirement in 1998; she then assumed the role of interim principal until a new principal could be appointed with full approval from the board of trustees). The Eden area has been home to several businesses including two grocery stores, three churches (First Baptist Church, Second Baptist Church, and Sacred Heart Catholic Parish), one post office (founded 1888), two schools (Eden High School and Gaston County Elementary School), and one hospital (Gaston County Hospital). Some of the older buildings still stand in downtown Eden including First Baptist Church which was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984; Second Baptist Church which was added to NRHP status in 1990; Sacred Heart Catholic Parish which was added to NRHP status in 2006; and Gaston County Elementary School which received recognition as a Local History Landmark on October 1st, 2009
