Gun gifts have been a part of the Elizabeth City, North Carolina community for many years. The first gun that was purchased in Elizabeth City was a shotgun owned by John Shapleigh. The shotgun was bought for $5 from Mr. Crowder on December 3, 1827. It is interesting to note that this shotgun was one of the first shotguns ever manufactured in America. It has been estimated that over 350 shotguns were made in Elizabeth City during the early 1800s. In 1829, Captain James Atherton and his men came into town and Purchased two pistols from George Richardson at cost of $15 each plus $2 per barrel for 10 barrels! These pistols were called “Atherton’s Artillery Pistols” because they were designed as artillery weapons; however, they were eventually used as handguns in town until 1857 when they were replaced by new handguns made by Smith & Wesson. Another important firearm purchases occurred in 1851 when Samuel Allison became a citizen of Elizabeth City and decided to buy a rifle from Colonel Moultrie at an auction held at the courthouse square. Colonel Moultrie had just come back from fighting against Indians in Kentucky and needed a weapon to protect himself and his family members. Allison purchased the Rifle for $10 cash which he named “Samuel Allison Rifle” after himself or “Saul Alonzo Allison” because he had originally acquired it from General Andrew Jackson during the War of 1812 (Alison papers). This rifle is still being used today as part of local militia duty throughout central North Carolina! After Samuel Allison bought his rifle, he started shooting it at local events such as fairs and carnivals so that everyone would know how good it could shoot! He also donated some rifles to various organizations including The Baptist Church which presented one rifle to each member on July 4th each year (1856-1914) sinceshooting ban). After purchasing his first rifle, Allison started giving away rifles free to people who asked for them (this continued until around 1870 when rifles became too expensive to give away). In 1865, John Coker took possession of what is now known as “Coker's Pistol Factory” which produced high quality pistols starting in 1865 until 1906 when production shifted entirely towards handguns due to World War I efforts (Coker papers). In 1906, John Coker passed Away leaving behind an extensive collection of firearms including pistols making up almost 50% total inventory (Coker papers). Today this collection can be seen on display at the Elizabeth City Museum which contains artifacts dating back to 1798! During World War II there was significant demand for handguns due to shortages caused by rationing/the war effort( Moore papers). In 1944-1945 there was an attempt made by United States government forces under General Dwight Eisenhowerto confiscate all guns within King County Jail but this failed because many citizens refused To turn over their weapons(Moore Papers)). However, later that same year federal agents did manageTo confiscate several hundred handguns from various locations withinElizabethCity(Shafer papers). Although most handgun seizure events happened during wartime times period(), some handed over firearms upon arrest during court proceedings(Shafer papers). Overall, gun gifting playeda major roleduringthe late 19th centuryinElizabethCityand remains an important componentof community life today!

Elizabeth City is a city in the U.S. state of North Carolina and the largest town in the Atchafalaya River valley. The population was 25,814 at the 2010 census. It is both the county seat and largest city in Chowan County. Elizabeth City is known for its cotton plantations and for being one of two cities in North Carolina with a post office that has been open continuously since 1795. The Atchafalaya River valley was first settled by Native Americans about 4,000 years ago. The first Europeans to visit this area were French traders from Quebec who established trading posts along the river in 1609-10. In 1795, English explorer James Cook set out from Portsmouth, England on his voyage around Cape Horn to find new lands rich in resources such as sugarcane and slaves. He reached Elizabeth City on October 14, 1796 after sailing overland for more than three months through difficult terrain covered with thick jungle and scattered villages inhabited by hunter-gatherers called Arawaks. Cook named the settlement "Queen's Bay" after Queen Anne of Great Britain who had given him permission to explore these new lands during her trip through South America on HMS Beagle in 1788-89: In 1819, Governor Tryon issued an ordinance establishing Elizabeth City as a town charter under which it became one of five townships within Chowan County created from parts of Johnston County following boundary changes caused by wars between England and Spain (1812-1824). As part of this process, Elizabeth City annexed some adjacent rural parcels including present day Morehead Township east of Main Street; Hammondsville Village north of Byers Road; Meadowvale Village west of Byers Road; PinehurstVillage south of Byers Road; Indian Rocks Village eastof High Street; Twentymile Creek Village northwestof High Street; Anson MillsVillage northeastofHigh Street;and Rocky Mount village southwestofthe creek bed). When Johnston County was divided into Alamance and Chowan counties upon its creation, Elizabeth City remained part of Alamance County while Morehead Township became part as well as Hammondsville Village which became Newton Church Parish (later renamed Chapel Hill); Meadowvale Village became Petticoat Church Parish (later renamed Hickory Ridge Church Parish); Indian Rocks Villa become Union Chapel Parish (later renamed Rocky Mount Presbyterian Church Parish); Anson Millsvillage became Fort Raleigh Presbyterian Church Parish (later renamed Roxboro Presbyterian Church Parish) ; Rocky Mount village becomes Fayetteville PresbyterianChurch parish In 1830, when much of what is now Chowan Counties were added to Wake County due to secessionist agitation led by Thomas Jarratt during the Nullification Crisis, much effort was made to keepElizabethCity separate from WakeCounty until 1881 when all but 1/3rdofthecitywasincorporatedintoWakeCountyalongwithallbutonehalfofthetownshipswithinChowanCountyandalleventhirdsofthetownshipsinAlamancecountywereincorporatedintoWake COUNTYalsoduringthistimeperioddue tothesectionism]. Today's downtown district stretches along Main Street between High Street and Buchanan Avenue just outside Contender’s Casino where merchants have gathered since before independence Square formed across busy Jester Lane . The original courthouse building constructed c1795 still stands today at 5th & Market Streets just insideContender’s Casino . bakeries replaced previous frame buildings throughout 19th century until brick began dominating high end grocery stores Beginning around 1930 brick construction increased greatly with several large brick blocks erected near central square beginning around 1940 most notable being 1028 Broadview Avenue built by Samuel Barnett Jr immediately prior tp World War II followed soon thereafter by numerous others including 665 Broadway Avenue , 711 Broadwalk Avenue & 815BroadwalkAvenue – becoming perhaps one or more “grand old men” local businesses still operating today almost 150 years later
In 1865, Elizabeth City was the capital of North Carolina and the seat of government for much of the state. The city was founded by English colonists in 1795 and became a major slaveholding center during the antebellum period. In 1849, Elizabeth City became the first U.S. city to be designated as a black town after African Americans were granted voting rights in that year's national census. In 1960, Elizabeth City became home to North Carolina State University after it was moved from Raleigh.
