In Elizabeth City, North Carolina, the town's history is intertwined with that of its shooting galleries and gunsmiths. The town was founded in 1837 by General James Longstreet, a Confederate general who played a significant role in the Civil War. After the war, Longstreet moved his headquarters to Elizabeth City and began construction on what would become known as "The White House" - an ornate mansion built for him and his wife. Longstreet's son-in-law, General Pemberton, became governor of North Carolina in 1865. Pemberton's widow, Ailsa Craighead Porterfield, decided to move her family to Elizabeth City so they could continue living close to their military father-in-law. In 1870, Porterfield purchased land adjacent to The White House and begun construction on what would become known as "Porterfield Park." The park had two main entrances: one at First Street and one at Elm Street. It was here that Porterfield began building his famous rifle range - which today still stands within the boundaries of the park. In 1892, Porterfield died suddenly and bequeathed his estate including The White House and Porterfield Park to his daughter-in-law Jennie Bogue Goodloe Gladney. Goodloe Gladney sold the house and property back to the city government in 1896 for use as a public library. In 1924, Goodloe Gladney donated all of her property (including The White House) back to the city government again for use as a public library again - this time called "The Mrs. Goodloe Gladney Library." AfterJennie BogueGoodloe Gladney's death in 1953 her husband Bob Goodloe took over management of both libraries until he passed away in 1984. In 1990, Bob Goodloe's wife Donna created "Elizabeth City Museum" inside of The Mrs.Goodloe Gladney Library - which remains open today as one of the most important museums located within Elizabeth City limits!

Elizabeth City is a city in Gastonia County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 18,927 at the 2010 census. It is the principal city of Elizabeth City and Gaston County. The municipality of Elizabeth City was formed in 1907 from part of the town of Unionville. The first European settler in what is now Elizabeth City was Englishman John Denton (1784-1850). He landed on Roanoke Island on December 12, 1784 and named it "Denton's Land". On October 21, 1800 he married Mary Easley and settled in what later became known as Elizabeth City. In 1802 they erected a log courthouse which served until 1809 when a new one was built by Johnson & Gunnison. A post office called "Denton" was established at this location on November 15, 1802; it remained in operation until 1865. In 1907 the towns of Unionville and Elizabeth City were merged to form a municipality with a total population of 14,587 people (1907 population estimate). The name "Elizabeth City" originated from an incident that took place within the municipality: In 1903 two hurricanes passed through Gastonia County while passing near Elizabeth City; their destructive power caused many homes to be destroyed or badly damaged but no injuries were reported within the Municipality itself. So much for coastal erosion! In 1933 James Hogg founded Blue Ridge Broadcasting System based out of his home which then became known as WBTZ after his death in 1973. Elizabeth City was founded in 1735 by the British, and became a part of Carolina in 1814. The city is home to the Elizabeth City Historical Museum and many other historical landmarks. In addition, Elizabeth City is an important center for energy production, with several oil refineries and gas stations located within the city limits. The history of Elizabeth City dates back to over two hundred years ago when the area that now includes Elizabeth City was first settled by Scots colonists. The Scots were displaced by English settlers in what is now Raleigh County in 1692, but they returned to Scotland three years later and established a trading post on the east coast of North Carolina. This early Scottish settlement was called Fort Orange because it stood near present-day Orange Avenue and Old Chapel Street. In 1735, British traders traveled through North Carolina looking for new land to settle. They discovered a tract of land along the Cape Fear River which they named Fort Orange after their Scottish trading post which they had just destroyed at nearby Wilmington (now Durham). The British government granted this land to John Moore, one of their own officers, as part of a deal that allowed them to purchase more than 1 million acres inNorth Carolina from Native American leaders during their expedition against Tarheel Indians in 1740. Moore soon began developing this land into what is now Elizabeth City. By 1800, Elizabeth City had grown considerably and included over 100 homes, 10 churches, 4 schools, 2 mills (one still operational), 5 stores, 3 taverns/bars/cafes/and 1 doctor’s office. Although not always thriving throughout its early years due to entrepreneurship or natural disasters such as hurricanes or floodings (the town experienced both during its earliest days), Elizabeth City slowly regained some stability and prosperity by 1850 thanks to growth in nearby Raleigh and additional development around Fort Orange (including construction of a railroad line that connected Raleigh with Charlotte). In 1860-1861 Governor Prentice Johnson ordered all Confederate soldiers who had fought during the Civil War between 1861-1865 must leave North Carolina; this led many entrepreneurial Scotsmen who had remained behind inElizabethCityto start anew businesses during Reconstruction Era times as opportunities opened up for them after slavery ended across America.
