He instead joined up with Major-General John Atherton's brigade and fought against Confederate forces under Jubal Early until they retreated southward towards Chattanooga with heavy losses on September 16th 1864 (the Battle of Chickamauga). In 1865, Fayetteville became the capital city of North Carolina after Raleigh moved from its original location within town limits. It remained an important military center through Reconstruction until 1887 when it was replaced by Charlotte as the state capital again (this time lasting until 1925). During this time period, Generals James Longstreet and Joseph Johnston performed significant operations within Fayetteville which helped contribute greatly to Northern victory during the Civil War (Longstreet later became president pro tempore of the United States Senate).
