At least one previous skirmish between Confederate forces and local Unionists had taken place here when Union troops attempted to lay siege to Fort Nashoba midway between Nashoba and Elizabethtown early in 1865 (see Battle of Nashoba). When Reconstruction ended in Southern Africa following military campaigns led by Confederate general Robert E Lee after Ulysses S Grant's crossing of the Edmund Pettus Bridge into Virginia on April 12, 1865 – effectively ending slavery throughout all but a few slave states where it continued until 1865 – most freedmen returned home or went eastward along with their slaves (known as "Amnestylanders").
