The National Guard in Fuquay Varina, North Carolina has a long and proud history. The unit was first organized on July 1, 1861 as the Coastal Artillery Battalion of the State Militia. It was initially known as “the Volunteer Infantry” because it was recruited from civilian volunteers who were not required to serve in the military. On November 17, 1865, this battalion became part of the new Confederate States Army and was known as the 2nd South Carolina Regiment (National Guard). Since its inception, the National Guard in FuquayVarina has played an important role in our community. It is responsible for providing law enforcement and disaster relief; guarding our schools and campuses; providing fire protection; and more. In addition, many members have served in other capacities within our community including police officers, firefighters, EMTs (emergency medical technicians), ministers, nurses and even personal caregivers. Fuquay Varina is a town in Forsyth County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is included in the Winston-Salem–Forsyth Combined Statistical Area. The town of FuquayVarina was established in 1868 when two farmers from neighboring counties met to form a trade association. In 1907, the town built its first school and post office. The original name of the town was "Varina". However, due to lack of demand for a post office by residents, the name changed to "Fuquay Varina" in 1912. In 1954, FuquayVarina's industrial area became home to one of the largest textile mills in NASCAR history when Easley Textile Company moved its operations there from Charlotte. The mill closed in 1984 and much of its equipment and storage were lost during Hurricane Floyd which destroyed much of Forsyth County including FuquayVarina. However, some reconstruction took place as part of New Market Park which opened in 2000 adjacent to fuquaysvarinatx mall on Interstate 40 between Chapel Hill and Winston-Salem. It replaced an defunct shopping center that had been located next to what is now I-40 eastbound exit number 5 (the original interchange for US 1/287) since 1971 when it served as an interchange for I-240/I-85/I-440 westbound traffic on both highways while also serving as a transfer point between I-240 and I-85 before they became three separate highways). As with most townships within Forsyth County merged into other municipalities over time or abandoned because their populations decreased so dramatically during development - such as Springdale Township - so too did Fuquay Varina; however unlike Springdale Township where it has seen population growth back up again through annexations by other municipalities since then (the annexation total stands at 10), FuquayVarina has effectively disappeared off map altogether since becoming suburbanized during the late 1990s with very little evidence remaining anywhere near its namesake town despite efforts by officials over many years to document and preserve any vestige remaining from its heyday as an important agricultural communityPlease feel free to add more information about this topic if you know more about it!
