During World War II, many factories were built in Garner to help support wartime production demands; however, few residents remained after hostilities ended in 1945. The current incarnation of Garner began to form when developers purchased land east of Interstate 85 in 1949 and developed it into what is now a suburban community with shopping malls and other local businesses located thereon (including First Presbyterian Church).
