Garner is a city in Wake County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 21,852 at the 2010 census. Garner was the second largest city in Wake County after Raleigh. It is part of the Durham–Chapel Hill metropolitan area and is located on the eastern edge of Chapel Hill. The first military deployments in Garner happened during World War II when the US Army's 1st Infantry Division arrived there to fight against Nazi Germany. The 1st Infantry Division operated out of Fort Bragg until 1945. After the war, Garner became home to many American servicemen who were stationed in Japan and Korea as part of Operation "Iwo Jima."
