The first national guard unit in Garner was established in 1795. The unit was known as Company C of the 1st Regiment North Carolina Volunteers. The company served in local militias throughout the 1800s and early 1900s. In 1864, Company G of the 1st Regiment North Carolina Volunteers was formed and served with distinction during the American Civil War. After the war, Company G disbanded and its members were scattered among other units within the National Guard. However, Company G's legacy continues to this day as an organizationalunit that provides support to county governments and First Amendment rights organizations throughout Garner County. In 1934, World War II began and Garner's volunteer militia effort stepped up significantly. Several companies were organized into battalion-sized commands which participated in amphibious assaults on beaches along I-95 near Wilmington or at Morehead City (now Raleigh). During these operations, many soldiers from Company C of the 1st Regiment North Carolina Volunteer Infantry received their first taste of combat while serving with distinction under Lieutenant Colonel John Sutter (1824-1902). It is interesting to note that Captain James Fenton (1867-1956), who later became Mayor of Garner and founder of Fenton Chevrolet Corporation, was one such soldier fromCompany C who fought during World War II. Afterward, Captain Fenton donated his medals and personal items from World War II service tothe National Guard Museum located in Raleigh.(See Appendix A for further information about this museum.) Garner has continued to play a significant role in local civic life through its volunteer militia program ever since World War II ended. In 1984, CitizenForce Incorporated (later called United Defense)was formed as a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing security services within municipal government areas across Johnston County including Camden(now Charlotte), Concord(now Durham),Durham(now Apex),Fayetteville(now Hendersonville),New Bern(now Newsome)(then Ninety Nine Plano),Spartanburg(then Greenville)andWakefield.(Now Cary). United Defense is currently responsible for providing law enforcement services within over 100 municipalities across Johnston County.(See Appendix B for more information about this program.) Since then, national guard gifts have become increasingly popular among citizens throughout Garner County as expressions of appreciation for our military service and commitment to community values. Many residents choose to give national guard gifts not only because they appreciate our military service but also because they believe that our gift will help promote patriotism and community involvement within their communities. This year alone we can expect numerous donations from individuals throughout Garner County in responseto patriotic events such as 4th Of July fireworks displays or homecoming parades (see Appendix C for examples).

From 1811 to 1815, the 3rd Minnesota Infantry was raised and served as an infantry regiment of the National Guard. In 1830, the 4th Minnesota Infantry was raised and served as an infantry regiment of the National Guard for four years before being disbanded. In 1840, the 5thMinnesota Infantry was raised and served as an infantry regiment of the National Guard for six years before being disbanded. In 1861, Abraham Lincoln called for troops to be brought into service to help fight against Confederate forces duringthe American Civil War. When war began on April 12th, 1861, only 8 companies out of 100 regiments which constituted the Federal Army had been mobilized due to lack of volunteers willing to serve in a wartime situation where slavery would not be abolished until after peace came through negotiations On October 14th 1861, just over a week after Abraham Lincoln announced his intention to call forth all able-bodied men between 21-60 years old into military service throughout America, Congress passed a resolution authorizing President James Buchanan to raise 10 companies (of 30 men each) from among Maryland’s male citizens aged 21-60 who could give three months notice thereof by writing or telegraphic notification transmitted within one hundred miles radius These Companies would become known as “The Maryland Regiments” because their home state represented about half of all enlistees drawn from across America Although these units did not actually come into battle until November 20th when Union General William Tecumseh Sherman destroyed nine Confederate brigades at Antietam Creek near Fredericksburg MD – Americans had already begun anticipating deployment should hostilities continue It is interesting to note that although many soldiers who enlisted in 1862 became casualties during combat or died while serving their country (a number that reached 50% by 1865), very few soldiers actually received medals or recognition posthumously Only five officers who participated in this mobilization are still alive today: Major General John Ahern (1863-1868), Brigadier General George Armstrong Custer (1865-1867), Major General Winfield Scott Hancock (1870-1872), Lieutenant Colonel Charles Hurlbut (1875) – all recipients either pension or retirement pay based on their longevity rather than any military decorations or awards As war continued with more significant Union losses at Gettysburg Empire State Theatre near Philadelphia on July 9th 1863 – almost 60% of those Enlisted wanted nothing more than a peaceful end but instead found themselves fighting - approximately 620 individuals lost their lives during US participation in World War I including 309 Marylanders killed in action including 33 members from our ownState During World War II there were also 460 Marylanders drafted into service including 36 officers killed while serving

Garner was founded in 1858 as a small frontier trading post on the Yadkin River by Jesse Garner and his wife Elizabeth. The post was named for General Nathanael Greene, who fought against British forces in the American Revolution. The town grew rapidly after road construction began in 1869 and rail service arrived in 1870. In 1902, Garner incorporated as a city and has since grown into one of the largest center cities in Johnston County with a population of over 10,000 residents.
Garner was a small town in central North Carolina until the early 1800s. The first settlement in what is now Garner was made up of farmers who lived on the edge of the woods near the mouth of Catawba River. By 1819, there were about eighty residents living in this area. Garner started as a small farmstead and gradually grew into a large town with over one thousand people by 1830. In that year, it became part of the new state of North Carolina. The growth of Garner led to increased demand for land and came with its own set of problems which include farmland being sold at too low a price, developers buying up land to build mills and other businesses, and increasing competition from surrounding towns. Despite these challenges, Garner continued to grow during the late 1800s and into the 1900s when it reached its peak population size around twenty-five hundred people. However, after World War I factors such as technological advances (such as automobiles) and changes in consumer behavior caused Garner's population to decline again. It peaked at fewer than two hundred residents by 1930 before slowly decreasing throughout the next decade. With its declining population, Garner began to lose some of its economic significance both nationally and locally until it fell behind Raleigh in terms of economic development by 1960.
