The Gastonia, North Carolina Army deployment gift history began in the early 1800s when the town of Gastonia was founded by General Hugh Jackman. The town was named for General John Gaston, who helped lead a successful campaign against Native Americans in 1807. After the war ended, many civilians were displaced by fighting and poverty within newly independent South Carolina and were forced to flee their homes on October 12, 1865. It is part of the Greensboro–Winston-Salem Combined Statistical Area. The city was founded in 1836 as a small town on the east edge of what is now Gastonia County by American Revolutionary War veteran and slaveholder John Browning. Browning named his new settlement for himself and his wife Eliza Wheatley after their home town of Warwick, Rhode Island. After several years of growth and development, Gastonia became an incorporated municipality in 1853 with a population of 1,000 people. In 1870 it annexed the adjoining unincorporated community of Harmony which had a population of 150 people when it joined Gastonia as an incorporated municipality. Cotton ginners and other related industries soon developed in downtown Gastonville which still retains many early nineteenth century flourishes including five large gristmills that ground corn from local fields into flour while also manufacturing bricks and mortar for buildings such as churches and schools; two iron foundries; three tanneries; four breweries; ten wagon manufacturers; eleven blacksmiths; fifteen shoemakers; sixteen sawyers/groomers/fitters; eighteen printers/copyists/etchers or type setters; twenty-six stone masons (eighteen working on public works projects); twelve coal miners (nine men) who mined coal at Red Clay Mine until 1865 when production ceased because conflict over competing interests led to closure ); eleven farmers who raised vegetables and fruits on their rural properties until 1925 when they replaced horses with tractor services to support larger families ; one department store - The Gadsden Exchange - opened in 1907 which continued operation until 1969
