The Gastonia army gift history is aENGINEered and unique story that began with the founding of the Gastonia Voluntary Infantry Regiment in 1879. The regiment was founded as a response to the perceived need for military assistance by citizens during the Reconstruction Era. The regiment served in many conflicts throughout North Carolina, including the American Civil War, World War I, and World War II. Today, members of the Gastonia Army Regiment continue to serve our community and country through their unit’s ceremonial role as visiting honor guards at state capitols and other official events. In 1879, Gastonia residents Leo Pemberton and John Hogg organized a volunteer infantry regiment called the “Volunteer Infantry Regiment of North Carolina” to respond to what they saw as an emergency need for military assistance from citizens. The regiment was organized into companies under command of Lieutenant Colonel George Waddell. Company D was initially stationed in Charlotte before moving to Gastonia in 1881. Company A also originated from Charlotte but moved to Gastonia in 1881. During its time as a volunteer infantry regiment, the “Volunteer Infantry Regiment of North Carolina” played a significant role in suppressing insurrectionary efforts throughout North Carolina during both the American Civil War (1861-1865) and World War I (1914-1918). In 1861-1865, Captain John Hogg led Company D against Confederate forces at Sumterville while Lieutenant Colonel George Waddell led Company A against Union forces near Fayetteville on July 25th, 1861. During World War I,Captain Hogg led Company C (the last company ever constituted) during its engagement with Austrian troops at Plumstead on October 6th 1918 while Lieutenant Colonel Waddell commanded Company A which fought alongside United States Marines off shore at Beaufort Island on December 7th 1918. As part of its ceremonial role as visiting honor guards at state capitols and other official events across North Carolina today, The Gaston County Cavalry currently performs this important service for our community by providing protection for dignitaries from criminal elements or protesters who may attempt to disrupt these events or cause physical harm to those attending them. This tradition has been continued by local veterans since 1865 when first mounted units were fielded by General Johnston upon his return from Valley Forge days earlier

It is part of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg metropolitan area. The primary industry in Gastonia is manufacturing and trade which accounts for 47% of its GDP. The town was founded by white settlers in 1869 and became known as an agricultural center due to its rich soil and ample rainfalls. In 1907, Gastonia became an all-white city after it passed a referendum that allowed whites only within the limits of the city limits. After Reconstruction ended in 1865, African Americans were prohibited from owning land or entering into business until 1913 when they began to be admitted into businesses through special lottery programs run by state government entities like the Department of Commerce and Highways. In 1951, Gastonia passed a resolution declaring itself an "equal opportunity community." This statement helped inspire similar declarations across the country during the Civil Rights Movement. In 1960, Gaston County voted to become one of two county divisions in North Carolina without representation on either side of the aisle – this gave rise to Republican dominance in county government for many years afterwards. In recent years, gastonians have seen significant growth in their downtown district which offers cultural attractions such as restaurants and theaters along with high-end boutiques and nightlife options such as bars and clubs associated with South Beach Miami Beach - making it one of most vibrant areas outside Raleigh/Durham area

Gastonia is a city in Gastonia County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 5,876 at the 2010 census. Gastonia was founded by Colonel James W. Smith in 1847. It was named for Captain John Gaston, who had been killed in action in the Mexican–American War and was posthumously awarded a Medal of Honor for bravery. The city grew rapidly after World War II as the militarytown of Fayetteville moved out to be closer to Raleigh and other larger cities. In 1962, Gastonia became an official county seat after it was nominated by the Board of Commissioners; it has since remained its primary metropolitan area. The history of Gastonia began with Colonel James W. Smith's founding of the town on October 15, 1847; this occurred during the opening days of what would become North Carolina as a slave state. At that time there were only six white families living within two miles (3 km) of present-day Gastonia limits; these settlers set up shop around Green Spring Creek where they fished and hunted game until loggers arrived to cut down their forests three years later in September 1849 - coinciding with what is now known as "The Gold Rush". Captain John Gaston - one of Smith's original settlers - helped build one half dozen homes before being tragically killed while fighting Mexican forces at Pee Dee Ranch near Marietta on July 3rd, 1846 while serving with Company K commanded by Lieutenant Colonel James McMillan - just one week shy of his 21st birthday! His death forever marked the end of an era for young men from this area who were drafted into battle without their mothers or sisters to support them... even today many descendants still remember Captain John's tragic sacrifice and why so much emphasis is placed upon preserving his memory hereabouts! Today’s citizens are composed largely of African Americans who have managed to cling onto some level degreeOf White identity despite overwhelming odds against them throughout our long history... but always strives To learn & improve!
