Gastonia, North Carolina is a city in Gaston County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 16,898 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Gaston County. The area now known as Gastonia was first settled by Scots-Irish and English colonists in the early 18th century. The city was founded in 1827 when a group of Scots-Irish men from Covington decided to settle in what is now Gastonia after being expelled from Ireland for their pro-independence activities. Gastonia became an important center for cotton production during the 19th century because it had a high enough elevation to allow large areas of the countryside to be cultivated without development prohibitively expensive or difficult to access. Cotton production declined after World War II but has since revived thanks to new investments and technological advancements including genetically modified cotton that makes it more resistant to pests and disease. The current skyline of Gastonia can be traced back to its founding as a small town with only two buildings: one located on Market Street and the other on Elm Street near Centerville Road. By 1830, Gastonia had 10 stores, 5 hotels and 100 residents. In 1865, lead entrepreneur John Ligon bought land east of present day downtown Gastonia and began developing what would become today's downtown district; he named it New developments after his three children who died young while attending college: John Ligon Junior (1837-1922), Anna Ligon Gregg (1841-1920) and John Ligon III (1845-1926). In 1895 plans were made for construction of an express railroad through central Gaston County linking Charlotte with Raleigh; this project never came to fruition due to financial difficulties within both cities combined however parts of today's downtown district still stand as evidence of what would have been built if this line had run through town. Today gastonia enjoys some impressive tourist attractions which include several beautiful preserved homes dating back over 200 years including Olde Hickory House Museum & Gardens which overlooks Downtown Gaston County; Pemberton Square Shopping Center which includes multiple boutique stores such as Macy's®, Sears®, JCPenney® and Sears& Roebuck® along with restaurants like Red Lobster®, Papa Johns(), Olive Garden™., etc.; Historic District which contains many interesting brick buildings dating back over 100 years including Wistar College (now UNC Asheville) where Robert E Lee attended undergraduate school before joining Confederate forces during the Civil War; Hwy 421 Visitor Center containing exhibits about local history such asslave auctions held at Fayetteville courthouse prior thereto; Paper mill complex also contains exhibits about paper manufacturing until 1893 inside old mill building also features replica original mills engines & boilers

Gastonia, North Carolina is a small town located in Gaston County, North Carolina. The population was 5,713 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greensboro–Winston-Salem metropolitan area. Gastonia became a county seat in 1871 and it has been an incorporated city since 1907. The United States Census Bureau defines Gastonia as having a total area of 2 square miles (5 km²), all of it land. The first Europeans to visit the area were French traders in 1607 who named the site "Gaston" after Jean de Gaston, Sieur de La Tour d'Athènes (1547-1622). The first permanent English settlers arrived in 1717 when Captain John Smith sailed upriver from Charleston and landed on what is now known as Steepletown Island. He named the island "Gaston" after his brother-in-law, Sir George Carteret (1601-1672). Lieutenant Governor James Moore granted a charter of incorporation to Gastonia on May 8, 1907. In 1865, General Robert Ewell Vaughan ordered Confederate forces to burn down Union stores near present day Gastonia while they were retreating from Raleigh. This event is commemorated by a bronze plaque erected at gates 9 and 10 of Government House in downtown Gastonia read: "General Robert Ewell Vaughan's Raid upon Gaston County" The first post office opened in Gastonia on October 15, 1907. In 1914 there was an outbreak of World War I and local businesses closed their doors because they could not handle the demand for goods produced by soldiers abroad. After the war ended there were no new factories built in Gastonia until about 1985 when Medical Technologies Incorporated moved its operations into downtown from Forest City NC until it left for Plano TX about 2000 In November 2007 Mayor Artie Campbell announced that he would not seek re-election due to health concerns; he had been running for office unsuccessfully every year since 1994 . There have been only two municipal elections held within Greensboro/Winston Salem Metropolitan Area: one held on November 3rd 2006 and another held on November 7th 2009 . Local government functions including police services have continued uninterrupted through most if not all recent statewide console changes which means that these services are under state jurisdiction
