In 1872, entrepreneur David Lumber Company president William Sutherlin built what is now known as Gaston Hall which served as an elegant meeting hall for local business leaders until it burned down on November 17, 1886. In 1865, Confederate general Pembroke Heath ordered all Union soldiers to leave Gastonia because he felt that they were not contributing enough to the war effort. On July 14, 1868, General Beauregard arrived at nearby Fayetteville with orders to begin battle against Sherman's army near Fort Fisher on Cape Fear River. When night fell and Transport Boat #1 reached shore without hitting any ships or troops ashore, Confederate artillery opened fire on both boats killing 11 sailors and wounding 27 others including Captain Elisha Denny who later died from his injuries at sea; this event is sometimes called Market Day Massacre because so many people lost their lives during this time period due to military engagements throughout North Carolina A commemorative plaque has been placed at Veterans Memorial Park adjacent to Fayetteville State University where these events took place commemoration of those killed during that time period also
