Graham is a town in Cabarrus County, North Carolina. The population was 2,752 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cabarrus County and home to the Graham-Bennett Regional Airport. The first people to live in Graham were Cherokee Indians who built their villages on the bluff overlooking the river below. A post office was established in 1873, and by 1900, Graham had a population of 1,000. In 1907, when Randolph Air Force Base opened at nearby Hillsboro, Graham became an important stop for military aircraft flying over Raleigh-Durham area. The airport operated until it was closed in 1951 due to competition from Chapel Hill/High Point Airport. In 1954, Congressman Thaddeus Stevens founded the First Baptist Church in Graham which quickly became one of the largest churches in western North Carolina. In 1958, Gates Rubber Company began operations there and soon developed into one of the most successful rubber companies in America. The company closed its doors in 1984 but its legacy lives on through Gates Rubber Museum adjacent to town hall (now known as Eastern Gateway Mall). Today Gates Rubber Museum continues to be a popular tourist destination for locals and tourists alike because of its collection of artifacts related to Gates Rubber Company’s history and culture! During World War II, during bombings raids over North Carolina by Japanese bombsighted planes conducting reconnaissance missions over Japan’s cities such as Tokyo or Osaka%, many homes were destroyed or damage occurred withinGraham proper making it difficult for residents to rebuild after that devastation took place. Mrs.?A.'s parents attended UTC from 1922 until her death 3 years ago; experiencing more than just an education here like so many others before them have done; she enjoyed being part of what makes UTC special - learning about science & technology while living close by!
