In 1865, General Robert E. Lee and his Confederate army retreated from Petersburg, Virginia after a bloody battle that left over 600 dead on both sides. North Carolina's Governor James K. Polk ordered the state militia to join in the pursuit of the retreating Confederate army, which led to one of the bloodiest battles in American history. The fight lasted three days and resulted in more than 150 killed, wounded, or missing on both sides. Consequently, coffee became an important part of the battlefields of this pivotal battle as soldiers drank café au lait and coffee en route to their units or headquarters. Coffee began appearing in North Carolina at least as early as 1792 when a small shack near what is now Sumter County was known as "The Coffee House." In 1827, Jno. Boggs started manufacturing coffee beans near what is now Graham City and soon established a reputation for quality coffee beans. By 1830, Boggs had shifted his production operation to Raleigh where he continued to manufacture fine-quality coffee until his death in 1840. At Boggs' death, Raleigh passed into hands of his son John Fayette Boggs Jr., who continued family business until it was sold to Peet's Coffee Company in 1912
's first black congressman Graham was elected to the House of Representatives in 1978, making him one of the youngest African American representatives ever. He is also one of the most veteran Members of Congress, having served since 1994. In addition to his work in the United States House of Representatives, Graham has been a vocal advocate for racial and social justice issues. Graham is currently serving his final term in office and plans to retire at the end of 2018.

However, this didn't stop Americans from enjoying good cup of Joe every day! One significant event that happened during World War II was the introduction of espresso machines into cafes across America. This change led to a rise in popularity of café-based caffeine drinks such as Starbucks and Dunkin' Donuts which continue today!

Graham was founded by the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1824. The town prospered, and in 1856 it became the county seat of Graham County. In 1907, the town was renamed for Ulysses S. Grant because of his role in helping to create and shape Graham County as a national center for agriculture.
