Greensboro is a city in the U.S. state of North Carolina, located on the eastern edge of the state's Piedmont region. The population was 71,816 at the 2010 census. Greensboro is one of the "Four Cities"--Charlotte, Raleigh-Durham, Fayetteville and Winston-Salem--that make up Charlotte metropolitan area. Greensboro has been inhabited by people for over 3200 years. The first European to visit what is now Greensboro was Captain John Smith who landed there in 1614 on his voyage from Jamestown to Virginia. He named it Newbern after a town he had seen in England before his arrival here. In 1755 General James Tryon founded what would become known as Tryontown here while commandeering an abandoned Loyalist plantation west of present day downtown Greensboro. At this time Tryontown consisted of a few scattered buildings and some tannery evidence that indicates animal husbandry may have been done here during early colonial times but nothing else remains today from that period or any subsequent ones until recently when excavations began at the old Tryontown site which revealed significant Revolutionary era development Here! The town rapidly grew thereafter with German immigrants coming primarily to work in textile mills and steelworks near Charlotte –an important factor affecting growth rates across much of Appalachia at that time –and new white arrivals beginning to arrive following World War II; many of whom became farmers or ranchers working adjacent land within easy reach of major metropolises such as Raleigh and Charlotte where they could access markets for their products. It wasn't until later during Mayor Proctor's tenure starting around 1984 when City Council moved forward with plans designed specifically addressing issues raised by previous administrations regarding parking availability adjacent to downtown core including rezoning existing Lots 5&6 within walking distance d' ouverture eastside Avenue providing more than 12 additional spaces per lot available subjectively contiguous throughout entire core plus enlarged alley between East Side Ave./Nashville Pike & West Side Ave./New Hope Rd…..all without diminishment or displacement efforts whatsoever…That finally ended what had been an ongoing saga involving various city officials who appeared sporadically at various meetings over several decades trying unsuccessfully ever since 1985 installment date not counting intervening mayoral terms resultant from reversals or acquittals !!!!! Despite all this effort culminating ultimately with issuance OF A DIRECTION FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF AN ADDITIONAL LOT AT WEST SIDE AVE./NEW HOPE RD….in spite OF NUMEROUS OBJECTIONS FROM CITIZENS AMONGST WHOM PREVIOUSLY THEY HAVE BEEN RESPECTED AS INTERESTING FRIENDLY NONCOMMITTEE MEMBERS OF CITY GOVERNMENT……!! greensborough Historical Society
