Greenville is a small and agricultural town located in the western part of the U.S. state of North Carolina. As of the 2010 census, its population was 39,898. The nickname "The Friendly City" is derived from its history as a center for cotton cultivation and trade. Prior to that, Greenville was known as Avery County seat. The city has been named after President George Washington and General John Marshall, both of whom were natives of Virginia or born there.
