In the late 1800s, a group of entrepreneurs decided to start their own coffee shop in downtown Greenville. The first gourmet Coffee House was open until around 1903. It was an impressive facility with an oven that roasted whole beans and a large pot that served many customers at once. Throughout the years, different entrepreneurs have tried to create their own versions of gourmet coffee shops and cafes. Some succeeded while others failed miserably due to lack of resources or competition from larger stores. However, one entity that has been continuously exporting high-quality Arabica beans since 1904 is The Peet's Coffee Company Ltd., which still operates today in downtown Greenville with its iconic green building and famous Dutch oven roastings.

However, some of the more popular stories about coffee include how beans were first grown in Africa, how roasting techniques have changed over time and how coffee became a global favorite. Some of the earliest references to coffee can be found in ancient Egyptian scrolls that mentioned ground-up beans being taken to Pharaohs for their morning drink. In China, records show that small shops selling shaved black beans were opened as early as 4th century AD. Coffee began to spread throughout India during the Ramayana period and Hindu scriptures such as Vedic texts mention roasted beans being used in religious ceremonies or even eaten with meals. Eventually, Arab traders brought coffee plants back to Europe and America before starting their own trading routes. English sailors discovered Java and East Timor in 1414 while exploring Asia and soon started importing Indian rupees (now known as Indonesian rupiah) worth of caffeine from those places. The Dutch also tasted Java's bitter pods during their explorations in 1602-3 but didn’t begin trading with Indonesia until 1798 when they first established a port at Banda Aceh on Sumatra. By then, Indonesians had already started cultivating tea plants which gave rise to the Dutch term “tea merchant” for these new arrivals who traded goods related to tea including spices such as cloves, cinnamon and cardamom; oilseeds such as soybeans; fruits like apples, pears/pomegranates etc.; rice; sugar cane; ices like watermelons etc.; all of which contributed considerably to Dutch trade with Southeast Asia throughout the seventeenth century. During this time period too Europeans developed an appreciation for dried red pepper flakes called cachaça which was sourness added by way of preservation (it still is processed today). This trend towards Europeanized flavors continued through World War II when American troops stationed in Southeast Asia began bringing back large quantities of opium which was used both medicinally and recreationally among local people before it was finally eradicated by Japanese forces in 1942-1945. It wasn't until 1955 when Indonesian President Sukarno announced his intention to establish a nationalcoffee industry after years of debate amongst government officials about whether or not it should be done – thus beginning what would eventually become Indonesia's largest coffee exporting sector ever!

The area that now comprises Greenville was first settled by Native Americans in 1772. In 1814 General James Longstreet's army surrendered at Appomattox Court House after a failed attempt to relieve Richmond during the Mexican–American War; this event marked what would become known as "The War for Northern Virginia." After being ceded to Virginia by Congress on February 14th 1815, land near present-day Greenville became part of Vance County under terms specified in Article VIII Section 2 of the United States Constitution whichsale all public lands northward thereof to interested parties within eight years from dateof Publication thereof "…and until otherwise provided". In 1848 Goldsborough Township was organized within Vance County; Goldsborough had been named for British general Sir John Alexander Macdonald who had been killed earlier that year while leading a scouting party through Vance County. On March 3rd 1850 when Edgecombe County was created from portions of Vance and Chowan Counties, Goldsborough Township remained within Edgecombe County but it boundaries were amended so that parts lying east or west of US 21 became part of ChowanCounty while those lying south became part of Vance County again.. On January 11th 1857 Samuel Armstrong founded Armstrong Land Company with capital stock amounting to $5200 with himself as President and Wm H Weaver as Secretary/Treasurer/Dealer; Armstrong offered land for sale throughout central NC including present day Greenville on five miles wide strip extending northeasterly from what is now US 421 northeast cornering Gates Avenue across Currituck River then continuing easterly along Brush Street thence along Waters Avenue into Cherokee Valley where it rejoined Gates avenue just east thereof…. these lots were patented on April 8th 1860… Armstrong sold his interest in libbey & co., grocery storekeepers (now Belk) in 1865 but still retained title to these Lots….. By 1875 there were over 160 stores operating in Greensboro alone…."
