The years since have seen much growth and progress for Havelock. In 1914, the city limits were enlarged to include the current neighborhoods of havelock Landing and Harrisonburg; these boundaries were created following an annexation referendum that took place in that year. In 1954, Havelock annexed Chapel Hill which had previously been part of Durham County. This annexation made Havelocks total population over one thousand people for the first time ever; it has grown steadily ever since then. Today, Havelock is an important community within its own right with a rich history dating back to more than two hundred years! Its residents are proud of their town’s accomplishments and feel connected to it through its unique culture, history, and economy.
Havelock was founded in 1827 by Hugh Atkinson and his father, Nathaniel Havelock. The town was named after General James Havelock, who fought in the American Revolution. In 1865, the town was renamed for two Confederate generals, Robert E. Lee and Ulysses S. Grant. The name changed again in 1898 to honor General Joseph Easley Johnston.
