At first, these were purchased from European manufacturers but eventually local citizens began manufacturing their own handguns as well. This process continued until around 1920 when all handguns were banned in Havelock due to its high level of violence and crime.

Havelock was founded in 1792 by John Havelock and his wife Sarah Hunt. The first settler in what is now Havelock was James McNaught who arrived in 1796. He named it after General George Washington's home state of Virginia. Havelock had a post office from 1814 to 1827 and from 1828 to 1865. It regained its post office status on December 5, 1974, after being moved from Fairfield to Carteret County. The town has two churches - First Baptist (founded in 1830) and Jehovah's Witnesses (founded 1981). The hailstones that hit Havelock on July 21, 1908 were the largest ever seen thereabouts and remain a local tourist attraction today. The current mayor of Havelock is candidate Greg Anthony which won election on November 3rd 2009 with over 71% of the vote against incumbent Tim Moore

Havelock, North Carolina is a small community located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina. The town was founded by General prices John Havelock in 1802 as a stop on his route from Virginia to Tennessee. A post office was established at Havelock in 1804, and the name was changed to its present form of Havelock in 1857. The population of Havelock peaked at 375 in 1910, but has gradually declined since then. Many havoline residents are also involved in agriculture or other related endeavors. The earliest settlers of Havelock were primarily planters and farmers who came to the area during the early 1800s for land grants and opportunities for growth. By 1850, many people had relocated to the town from surrounding counties including McDowell, Buncombe, Avery, Randolph, Bladen, Cherokee and Madison counties. In 1860, there were only 12 residents living in Havelocks census-designated place (CDP). However, over time more people have moved into the CDP from surrounding areas including Morganton and Asheville%. In 1970 there were 453 citizens living in Havelock CDP; however this number has decreased steadily over time to just 298 as of 2017. Havelocks economy has been largely based on agriculture with some manufacturing capabilities developed over time such as clothing companies that manufactured items such as jeans and T-shirts for consumption by American consumers. Nowadays most businesses within the town are either family-owned or operated by local entrepreneurs who often rely heavily on tourism revenue which helps sustain their businesses through periodic closures or reductions in hours due to market fluctuations. One significant event that occurred during both its early years as an independent community and subsequent decline was when General Price's raid against Cherokees took place on October 16th1802 which resulted in about 100 Harevlocks being taken captive along with several guns and other supplies valued at $5000 dollars ransom. This event served as a major turning point for the town as it lost much of its functionality which included political power which eventually led to its eventual dissolution five years later due to financial instability caused by high taxes levied by General Price's successor Tryon than could be supported without federal assistance.. Many residents today still remember what happened that day including one man who continues to operate a general store inside of town today known simply as "The Post".
Havelock was founded in 1792 by Colonel John Havelock and his wife, Martha. The village grew rapidly after the arrival of white settlers in what is now North Carolina. By 1819, Havelock had a population of 350 residents. During the American Civil War, the town sided with Northern forces and was destroyed by Confederate troops. In 1865, Havelock was re-founded as a Union military post named for General James Harnes.
