The Havelock Military Museum is a museum located in the town of Havelock, North Carolina which tells the story of the military gift history in Havelock. Havelock is a small town in Durham County, North Carolina. The population was 4,812 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Durham County and the largest city in Durham County. The city's economy depends on its relationship with research universities such as Duke University and UNC Chapel Hill. The first settler in what is now Havelock was John Tryon from Scotland who arrived there in 1792. Tryon built a cabin on the site of present-day Havelock High School which he named for General George Washington. Tryon's grandson, Alexander Johnston Tryon, founded what is now known as Tryon City (later renamed to Havelock) on April 12, 1824 when he purchased land east of present-day Raleigh from David Henderson for $5 per acre. At the time it was one of four counties in Durham County that were not included within Wake Forest Township or Elizabeth City Township which formed Durham County after incorporation by an act of the NC General Assembly on November 3, 1827. In 1850 John Witherspoon opened a store at Third Street and Congaree Avenue which became known as "The Warehouse" because it served as both a mercantile center and local dropoff point for transportations such as goods bought by farmers along Congaree Creek from Moorestown to marketplaces in Raleigh and other towns across Wake County. In 1861 Witherspoon sold his interest in The Warehouse to James Denton who continued to operate it until about 1917 when it burned down due to careless storage practices by its new owner. In 1875 JF Pyne organized two hundred men from various parts of eastern North Carolina into three companies called The Forty-Niners militia under Captain Pyne who marched northwestward through Alamance Parish toward Wilmington where they intended to join General James Longstreet's army attempting to retake Richmond following Confederate defeat at Yorktown while also providing security for railway passengers traveling between Raleigh and Wilmington. However before reaching their destination they encountered friendly pioneer settlements located around what are nowthe cities of Cary and Salisbury including Havelock which offered them shelter while they stored their equipment near their current location south of downtown Raleigh during this pivotal period in American history known as Reconstruction following the Civil War A year later Captain Pyne's forces crossed into Iredell Parish and attacked several settlers near present day Gastonia without warning or provocation resulting in heavy losses for Pyne's command including five dead, fifteen wounded, many homes destroyed or set alight including that of Captain Pyne himself who survived unharmed but lost his leg below the knee after being jumped by six Confederates while lying prostrate beneath some trees just outside Gastonia limits Pyne returned home via train arriving back at his farmhouse about dusk on October 25th after marching all day long having covered more than 45 kilometers nonstop! He had become somethingofa national hero throughout Reconstruction northcentral Carolina.) By 1887 Captain Pyne had been made brigadier general commanding all troops Volunteers Provisional District #2 headquartered at Greensboro followed by Headquarters Department #1 stationed at Charlotte until 1898 when he retired from military service effective September 30th becoming concurrently headmaster/superintendent school district No 1 Hampton Roads Schools). Havelock is a town in Cabarrus County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 5,848 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Raleigh–Durham Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first mention of Havelock comes from a deed from John Randolph to his son-in-law James Bowles in 1792. He stated "I give and sell unto you one Negro slave named Harry." In 1806 Nathaniel Pope claimed land east of the Havelocks on which he built a cabin and raised Hemispherical Antiques business until his death in 1836. His widow Nancy moved to Havelock after his death and lived there until her death in 1871. In 1867, Gouverneur Morris brought over 1,500 slaves from Georgia to work on plantations near Forsyth County in what is now eastern Cabarrus County for £20 per head or $4 per week wages plus food and shelter. The freedmen were known as the "Morris Five". This event helped spur white settlement around what is now Havelock and gave rise to its name: "The Fertile Crescent". In 1865, Alexander Wilson founded Wilson's Mills Company with hopes of manufactured goods coming into the area for sale to local farmers. Unfortunately, this venture failed due to lack of demand from local merchants who could not afford the high prices set by Wilson himself. However, Wilson's dream would come true 10 years later when he opened Myer's Department Store on High Street in downtown Havelock in 1903 which became one of North Carolina's most successful businesses ever. Havelock eventually lost its status as an agricultural center because it lacked access to markets outside of Raleigh and Durham proper (the state capital). However, it did maintain a significant presence within Northern NC through its manufacturing capabilities until recently when those industries have all but disappeared entirely within the state due largely to technological advancements rather than economic development trends. There are several interesting examples of how this has played out over time such as Bobcat Products Corporation being founded here back in 1905 by two men – Clarence Myer (founder/owner/CEO) and Lester Allison – while also serving simultaneously as both City Manager for Durham during that time period while also working fulltime at Myer’s Department Store; or Rowe’s Millinery becoming one of only three textile mills statewide certified by US Textile Manufacturers Association beginning operations here back in 1916 despite having no physical plant inside our city limits! There are many contributions made throughout history by people who have resided or worked here including Drayton McLane who cofounded UNC Chapel Hill along with Wm Crain Sr.; Harmon Brewing Co./Harmon Brewery Hall becoming home brewery for locals soon after opening; Donelson Electric CooperativeOpened shop early 1936 providing electricity for homes & businesses throughout town; Floyd Blease established H&B grocery store open 1949 closed 2001 making him one of longest running hosiery stores west Of Interstate 95
