Havelock is a town in Chatham County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,851 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Chatham County. The name "Havelock" originally referred to an area near present-day Havelock City. The first settler in what is now Havelock was James Fenton. There were no white people living in this area when the Cherokee Indians attacked and burned down Fenton's house in 1785. After the attack, settlers began moving into what is now Havelock from other parts of Chatham County and created new communities there including Rocky Mount, Cooksville, Andalusia and others. In 1802 John Cushing erected a log cabin on the site of present-day town which became known as Cushing's Cabin because he used it as his home until his death in 1854. The first post office was established at present-day town on May 9, 1824 by Jno. Laughlin under the name Ofcrawford Station (now known as Haverhill). A store and tavern called The Post Office were built there soon after by Colleton Burt and Wm. Allison before being destroyed by fire on December 11, 1830; both men received jail time for their actions. In 1850 David Dixon organized a Baptist church in what is now Havelock; he named it Great Falls Church because of its location near Great Falls Lake within easy driving distance of Havelocks residents although no religious services ever took place there due to constant Methodist preaching elsewhere which discouraged Baptists from using public facilities such as churches while they still practiced Quakerism outside those walls between 1830 and 1860-.
