The United States Air Force (USAF) has a rich history dating back to World War II. The USAF was created in 1947 as the independent air arm of the United States Army and had its first operational flights only two years after its creation. In 1955, the USAF was redesignated as an all-volunteer military service and began operations from bases across the country. Today, the USAF is one of America’s most versatile and powerful military services with over 324,000 enlisted members and more than 118,000 civilians operating under its command. The USAF plays a critical role in global security by providing force protection for U.S. embassies, generals, diplomats and other key targets around the world. Additionally, the USAF provides refueling and airspace control capabilities to allied nations during peacetime or wartime situations. In Hickory, North Carolina, it is hard not to NOTICE THE AIR FORCE BASE! This massive structure is located just outside of town on what used to be a small family farmstead – today it is home to one of America’s largest airfields! It should come as no surprise then that this community has been heavily involved in both civilian and military aviation since before there were any airstrips here! The first airport here opened in 1917 when Captain George Ellington built an agricultural airstrip on his own property near present-day Hickory High School. The USAAF operated out of this facility until 1942 when they moved into their new larger base at Pembina AFB east of Raleigh. Here they continued to play an important role in Air Forces throughout World War II before being disbanded following V-E Day in 1945 (see sidebar below for more about WWII). Hickory AFB wasn’t completely abandoned until 1962 when General Curtis LeMay decided that he needed a large enough airport so that he could operate all his bombers from one place! He ordered Colonel Al Wittman who was then Director of Civil Aeronautics at Wright Patterson AFB to build what would eventually become Hickory Airport – which opened nine months later on November 1st, 1962! At that time Hickory AFB consisted of four runways: parallel 4/22; Runway 15/33 (later 17/35); runway 33L+3R which served visual instrument landing tests; along with three taxiways: 3L & 3R & 2L & 2R + N&W runways heading towards downtown Raleigh; N&W runways leading towards Tyndall AFB (now known as Wake Forest University). Due to its location close to major population centers and diverse activities taking place here such as agriculture etc., Hickory quickly became something OF NOTE within our community! Although many people may never have visited or even heard about this amazing airport…..it remains proof that aviation continues TO Play A VERY IMPORTANT ROLE IN OUR CULTURE AND SOCIETY!!!

The Hickory Air Force Base gift history dates back to 1944 when the United States Air Forces started using the Hickory airfield. The base was originally named "Fort Bragg" and served as a training ground for pilots and enlisted men of the United StatesAAF. In 1946, Fort Bragg became an active military installation and was renamed "Hickory Army Air Field". In 1948, Hickory AFB became home to the first bombardment squadron in USAF History with the activation of 4th Bombardment Wing (4-BW) at Hickory. The wing was made up of aircraft from Seymour Johnson AFB, North Carolina and MacDill AFB, Florida. In 1951, 4-BW relocated to Greenville AB, South Carolina after being activated there as part of Project Blue Book. On 1 October 1952 4-BW moved again when it became one of two bombardment wings inactivated at Shaw AFB, Virginia due to budget cuts. On 15 May 1954 the base changed its name once again when it came under control of Strategic Air Command (SAC). At this point Hickory had become a major bomber center with three operational groups including: 3d Bombardment Wing (3-BW), 9th Bombardment Wing (9-BW), and 12th Bombardment Wing (12-BW). It was also during this time that SAC began operation of Lockheed P-38 Lightning fighters at Hickory which would eventually lead to its disbanding in 1958. On 10 March 1955 SAC activated Commands Headquarters at Hickory which would serve as Headquarters for all USAF areas within SAC; these commands were: Eighth Air Force HQ – based at Greenville AB; Ninth Air Force HQ – based at McGuire AFB, NC; Twelfth Air Force HQ – based at Barksdale AFB, LA; Fourteenth Air Force HQ – basedAt Beale AFB，California]; FifteenthAirForceHQ - locatedat Hunter Mountain Airport near Stewarts Valley，New York State’s Catskill Mountains]. In December 1957 SAC activated Task Group 67.2 “Operation Neptune” which flew combat missions over Vietnam against Viet Cong forces however it ended on 7 January 1958 without any kills or damage accomplished beyond that lost by units operating under task group banner rather than directly under commandant General Armstrong himself who personally directed operations throughout their duration while concurrently commanding other elements associated with III Bomber Command responsible for strategic bombing campaigns in Europe & Asia.]
