The first espresso shop in Hickory was founded by Giovanni de' Medici in 1829. The shop was located on Second Street and served coffee to local merchants and officials. In 1860, a grocery store on Third Street opened and became the first restaurant in Hickory to serve espresso. In the early 1800s, Coffee Lakeasa beans were grown near Hickory. In 1907, Coffee Lakeasa began exporting its beans to Italy. From 1908-1910, Coffee Lakeasa purchased a farm in Asheboro that yielded 2 million pounds of coffee. The farm continued production until it was sold to Peet's Coffee Company in 1960. In the 1940s, Artisan Coffee Shop moved from First Avenue into an existing old mill building on Elm Street. The mill had been built in 1792 as a flouring mill for John Swann & Son (now part of Dean Foods). It ceased operations in 1939 and was converted into an art gallery before being used as an arts center between 1945-1959. In 1967, Artisan Coffee Shop relocated back onto Second Street and changed its name to "Hickory Roasters". In 1988-1990, the business changed its name again to "Artisan Coffees" after moving from their original location within the old Mill Building onto present day Elm Street adjacent to PNC Park.

Hickory is a town in Gates County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 921 at the 2010 census. Hickory is part of the Raleigh-Durham Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town's first written record comes from 1775 when it was called "Hickory Creek." It became an incorporated town in 1847. Hickory is located on U.S. Route 421 north of Raleigh and east of Durham. The first inhabitants of what is now Hickory were Hennepin Indians who arrived in 1699 as part of a party led by Major John Smith and other settlers from Virginia. The Hennepin built their initial village on a mound near present-day downtown Hickory and started trading with local tribes for goods they collected along the Catawba River valley to the south and west. In 1775, after Fort Donelson had been destroyed by General George Washington's army during the Battle of Dumfries Heights, some white men decided to move into this new area and named it "Hickory Creek" because there were hickories (a type of oak) growing abundantly around present-day Hicksville in that vicinity. In 1847, Hickory became an incorporated town under the name "Gatesboro". At that time, most people living within its boundaries worked as farmers or stockmen on farms outside the town limits; however, many residents also engaged in manufacturing or trade within downtown Gatesboro which developed into one of America's largest markets for agricultural products until superseded by larger metropolitan areas such as Philadelphia and Baltimore starting in the early 20th century. When Interstate 95 was completed through Gatesboro in 1986, much spurting development took place within its borders with 578 businesses opening up along I-95 between Raleigh/Durham International Airport and Charlotte/Mecklenburg County Line; today these businesses are scattered throughout parts of both cities while downtown Gatesborough remains anchored by only 8 commercial parcels dating back to 1886 including 2 banks which still occupy original building space within city limits today: First National Bank & Trust Company (founded 1889), now JPMorgan Chase & Co., Inc., also home to NC State University's School Of Business Administration; and Beecham’s Drug Store (established 1924), now JBG Digital Media Solutions Headquarters LLC.. Today there are several interesting museums located inside or adjacent to downtown Gatesborough including The Historical Society Of Gatesboro (established 1907), The Earl Lee Museum Of Art (opened 2003), Garrison Park Historic District Museum (dedicated to Confederate General Robert Ewell Garner 1870-1920) and Hodges House Inn & Conference Center - gateway attraction for Overton Park events since 1995). Amongst DowntownGatesters still active today are several post office buildings: First National Bank Building (1886), Post Office Annex #2(1927), Hodges House Inn & Conference Center - Gateway Attraction since 1995(1985). There are also several parks located throughoutgatesterneighborhoods including Garrison Park Municipal Recreation Area just northeast of downtown Gatesborough containing swimming pools, playgrounds, a community center complete with library/gallery complex etc., Overton Park Residential Zone - formally annexed into Mayor James Moore's zoning boundaries circa 2000 comprising approximately 2400 acres park bounded largely east / southeast by Goose Bog Rd./ intersecting Interstate 95 just south off US 421 near Guilford Road exit etc.; greenfield projects underway or currently under construction at depths varying from about 12 feet underground near Gooch Road access road entrance all the way down to more than 60 feet beneath Farmington Road intersection outside Gatesterneighborhood Limits; among these various parkland initiatives various significant infrastructure projects have been undertaken such as installation or replacement of artificial turf fields at GOOSE Bog Beach LOT 4A&B across from Post Office Annex #2 followed by resurfacing streets I-95 immediately north / east OF POST OFFICE ACCESS ROAD without regard thereto...
