Hickory is a small town in Johnston County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. Hickory is part of the Raleigh–Durham–Chapel Hill Metropolitan Statistical Area. The village of Highland was annexed by Hickory in 1923 and became a separate municipality. The first settlers to what is now Hickory were white men who arrived in 1772 from Georgia. They named their new home "Hickory" after the hickory tree they saw on their trip across the state line. In 1827, a group of Scots-Irish immigrants settled here and started a farm that still exists today called "the Domain". The Scots-Irish had come overland from Ireland and were not authorized to vote or own property until after 1800. In 1892, Hickory voters passed an ordinance establishing a school for black students which began operation in 1893. In 1951, Hickory School District was created when several smaller districts merged into it. The Attractions Board has designated four historic sites in HickORY: old Hixon Baptist Church (1836), Elmira House (1850), First Presbyterian Church (1901), and Old HickORY Store (1923). These five structures are among the earliest examples of Gothic Revival architecture in North Carolina and display characteristics typical of this style including pointed arches, steeple roofs, intricate brackets, gables with dormers and bay windows, and ribbon entablatures around the door jambs.
