Hickory, North Carolina is a town in Haywood County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. Hickory is the county seat and largest city of Haywood County. It is part of the Raleigh–Durham metropolitan area. The town was founded by Scotsmen in 1760 as a trading post on Catawba River near present-day Hickory City. The community grew rapidly due to its strategic location undammed by other Flood Control Districts then existing in the area which prevented major Creek and Cherokee invasions during the 1810s and 1830s. In 1853, Hickory became one of nine towns incorporated into Raleigh as part of an effort to improve transportation between Raleigh and Durham via roads already built around that time. By 1870, with growth in nearby Cary and Chapel Hill, Hickory had outgrown its original limits and became an important center for trade within the newly formed state of North Carolina. As Raleigh's economy began to decline after World War II, Hickory experienced rapid growth as a bedroom community for much of southern Durham County until the late 1990s when several large shopping malls were developed on former textile mill sites within walking distance of downtown buildings including some containing high-end stores like Macy's department store (now JCPenney) . Hickory has been home to many famous people including Ulysses S Grant who attended school here from 1841-1845; General Robert E Lee who spent his boyhood years here before entering military service at age 12; physicist Walter Isaacson who wrote about "The American Revolution" here; Carleton Watkins III who played football at UNC Chapel Hill and later co-founded PNC Bank; author Cheryl Strayed; basketball player Julius Erving
