The Naval Air Station at NAS Greensboro was originally founded as the Naval Air Station Hickory in 1922, and has since served as the headquarters for both the Navy’s 5th Fleet and Marine Corps Forces Atlantic. In 2007, NAS Greensboro became home to Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, which is one of four active duty military installations in North Carolina responsible for operations across all three branches of service (Army, Marines, Navy). In honor of Vice Admiral Gary Eminente who passed away in 2006, NAS Greensboro hosted an event called “Heroes Remembered – A Tribute To Vice AdmiralGary Eminente” which honored his memory with a varietyof popular entertainment activities including an outdoor concert by Ray Price & The Fabulous Thunderbirds on May 26th followed bya formal dinner at Quincey Manges Hall on June 2nd where he was awarded an honorary degree! The National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2017 (NDAA) authorizes the deployment of up to 8,000 U.S. military members in Afghanistan and Iraq for a period of three years. The NDAA also directs the President to establish a task force to explore options for increasing the number of military deployments within five years. The Navy is currently deploying ships and sailors to Operation Inherent Resolve, or OIR, in Syria as part of the Combined Joint Task Force-Operation Inherent Resolve. This mission includes conducting airstrikes against ISIS targets in Raqqa,Syria. USS Donald Cook (DDG 78) and USS John S McCain (CVN 68) are both deployed with Expeditionary Strike Group 5th Fleet along with destroyers USS Porter (DDG 71), USS Ross (DDG 79), USS Higgins(DDG 97), andUSS Winston Churchill(LHD 9). These warships are joined by HMS Triton(LHAS 741) later this month. This large deployment sends a message that America is always ready to fight and support our allies no matter what happens on the ground in Syria and Afghanistan. The Navy has been able to send Sailors home after completing their tours without having any casualties which shows how well they're doing their job - even when it's hard out there!

Hickory, North Carolina is a small town in the eastern region of the United States. It is located on the border of Clay and Pickens counties, about 15 miles east of Raleigh and 10 miles west of Hickory. The population was 2,574 at the 2010 census. The first white person to live in Hickory was James Caldwell in 1795. In 1819, John Hicks [1] set up a gristmill here that still stands today. A post office was established here in 1825, and by 1830 there were over 100 residents in Hickory. In 1836, as part of a larger land purchase by General Robert Ewell during the American Civil War, Hickory became part of Vance County. In 1865 it reverted back to Clay County when Vance County was lost to Unionism during the war. In 1870, Hickory had a population of 1,500; by 1880 it had increased to 3,000 with 400 houses and an increase in industry including tanning and spinning mills. During World War II Hickory produced munitions such as rocket propellants and shells for use by the military. Many people who lived here during those years have passed away or are no longer living: Major General George Custer (1867-1941), Admiral Chester Nimitz (1920-2006), Vice President Al Gore (1993-2000), singer Dolly Parton (1935-2015).

Hickory is a town in Rutherford County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 6,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Rutherford County. Hickory has been home to a Chickasaw Indian town for over two centuries and is now one of the most diverse communities in all of North Carolina with residents from all over the world. The first known settlers in what is now Hickory were three men who journeyed from Georgia in 1736 on a secret mission to settle down and help take care of their kinsmen who had fled to America during the Great Frontier War. They named their new settlement "Hickory" after an oak tree they found growing near their cabin. In 1741, Colonel James Robertson decided that Hickory was too far away from Fort Loudoun for his military unit to garrison and relocated his troops there instead. The community grew slowly until it reached its present size in 1824 when John Slesinger bought land adjacent to Fort Loudoun and began developing it into a town. The first post office opened in 1827 and was called "Fort Loudoun." In 1829, local farmers formed a school board which named itself the "School District No. 1". By 1840, Hickory had outgrown Fort Loudoun so much that it became its own municipality separate from Rutherford County under the leadership of Drury Wright (1806-1875). In 1849, John Hogg purchased land south of town from Slesinger and plans were made to establish a steamboat landing there but this plan never came to fruition because Hogg died before he could build it. In 1861, Confederate General Pee Wee Robinson arrived at Fayetteville with about 2,000 soldiers for an attempt on Raleigh; however no action took place as Union General Robert Easley intercepted them at Brier Hill just outside Fayetteville early on September 12th 1861 and drove them back across I-40 near present day Frazier Park before they could reach Raleigh proper

The population density was 1,624.5 people per square mile (611.3/km²). There were 11,071 housing units at an average density of 685.2 per square mile (269.4/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 96% white; 2% black or African American; 0.1% Native American; 1% Asian; 0.03% from other races; and 2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3%. There were 10,906 households out of which 36% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53% were married couples living together, 12% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32% were non-families. 27% of all households were made up of individuals and 9% had someone living alone who was 65 years old or older.
