Hickory became an important center for textile production during World War II because Allied air forces used it as a radar station and other activities required secrecy while bombing mainland United States cities such as New York City and Washington D.C.. After 1945 Hickory lost its importance as a manufacturing center but has been slowly regained since then due to its natural resources (such as coal) and businesses based there like health care services and tourism
