In 1971, the company was sold to J&J Coffee which continued to produce high-quality coffee until 2001 when it merged with Peet's Coffee & Tea to form Peet's/J&J Coffee Corporation. In 2006, J&J announced that it would be selling its assets to Dutchroast Coffee Co., Ltd., making High Point one of only a handful of U.S. cities that will have their own roasting operation under this new brand name (the others being San Francisco and Seattle). Today, there are many restaurants and cafes throughout town that serve up delicious cup of Joe every day! One popular tradition here is called "Brewing Day." High Point is a town in Gaston County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 5,379 at the 2010 census. The name "High Point" is derived from high ground near the town. The first settlers in the area were Native Americans and early white men who built homes on hills overlooking the river that now forms their downtown skyline. In 1811, High Point became part of Gaston County and was incorporated as a town on July 1, 1876. Since its incorporation into Gaston County, High Point has experienced growth in both population and businesses. It is home to two universities – UNC-Chapel Hill (the state's largest university) and Davidson College – as well as several shopping malls and professional districts including Gate City Center and Renaissance Place. High Point is a town in Alamance County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 6,854 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Raleigh–Durham–Fayetteville metropolitan area. High Point was founded in 1792 by Colonel John Sevier and General James Fenton as a trading post on the Catawba River. The Post Office was established in 1803. In 1811, High Point became a part of the newly created Durham District of North Carolina and changed its name to Durham in 1821. The first mills were built here around 1830 and began operations as textile mills making cloth for export to Europe. They were also used to make tobacco but soon found other markets for their products as well. By 1860, however, textile production had ceased and most of the mills were destroyed by fire or demolition during Hurricane Floyd in 1969. The few remaining mill buildings have been used ever since as residences or commercial businesses. In 1909 the town purchased 375 acres (174 ha) of land upstream from its current site on the Catawba River for $1 million dollars to form what would become known as "The Meadows." This parcel included some of today's most popular tourist attractions such as Lakewood Cemetery and Kings Mill State Park; it has been called "the heartland of American Hiking". A year later, High Point Stadium was built there for use by local high school football teams until 1998 when they moved across Durham Street into nearby Duke Stadium which still stands today - serving as home field for both Duke University men's soccer and baseball teams (as well as numerous minor league baseball clubs). As one result of advances in transportation technology over the years - including Interstate 95 being constructed right through town - shopping centers have sprung up all around town with large stores like Sears (#5), JCPenney (#9), Macy’s (#10) and Kohl’s (#14) among them developed along Chapel Hill Road near I-95 while smaller stores remain close to downtown including GNC #2 (closed now), Lowe’s #3 (closed now) and TP House video store #4 (closed now). Today High Point is an attractive mix of residential development, commercial activity & tourism that offers much more than just a sleepy rural community located within easy reach of Raleigh-Durham-Fayetteville though its remote location may be somewhat off-putting to visitors unfamiliar with America's third most populous city/county/region!
