As the birthplace of the first Starbucks in 1994, Holly Springs has a rich coffee history that can be traced back to before that. The beans used for regular and artisan coffee here originated from two small farms near town. One was started by a family of farmers who grew chestnuts, and the other was run by a man who grows huckleberries. These small businesses traded goods and services with each other, which helped to create some of the earliest commercial relationships in Holly Springs. The first Starbucks opened up on an old cotton gin in 1994, and it quickly became one of the most popular shops in town. The coffee here was unusually good, and people were drawn to its unique flavor profile. It wasn’t until 2002 that Starbucks began selling lattes made with whole bean coffee – this allowed customers to explore different flavors and roast levels without having to worry about buying pre-packaged blends. There is no one definitive history of artisan coffee in Holly Springs, North Carolina. However, there are a number of stories and anecdotes about the coffee industry that can be found scattered throughout the region. Some early pioneers in the coffee business in Holly Springs were Jesse Owens and his brothers Harry and Julius Owens, who started a grocery store on Wilkinson Street in 1865. The O’Neills also ran a distillery called Olde Hickory Coffee Plantation, which produced its own beans and supplied many cafes across the South with their morning espresso. The first recorded café in Holly Springs was The Coffee House on Governor Street, opened by William Fenton in 1883. In 1915, entrepreneur John Pemberton opened the first gas station in town, which served as an early haven for local artists and entrepreneurs. By 1930, Backman's Café had become one of downtown Holly Springs' most popular spots for breakfast or lunch. In 1951, entrepreneur Artie Hawkins founded Hawkins Coffee Roasters at 9th & Patton Streets. Hawkins introduced roasted whole bean coffee to the area and soon became known for his delicious blends - including Breakfast at Artie's (a popular dish featuring eggs benedict), Dark roast (for rich flavor profiles), Almond milk (for adding richness), Chai Latte (a blend of black tea with chai spices) and Midas ($5+) cups of hot chocolate made from 100% pure cold-pressed Honduras grown cocoa beans! However, it is generally agreed that coffee first began to be produced and enjoyed as a beverage in the Middle East in the 6th century AD. Whether this was due to cultural factors or natural resources is still up for debate, but by the 7th century AD, coffee had spread throughout much of North Africa and Europe. Soon after, different methods of roasting were developed which led to unique flavors and aromas. The development of espresso machines in the 18th century helpedurther promote coffee as a social drink. By 1850, however, Coffeehouses such as Starbucks were beginning to appear across America. Coffee became popularized in the Netherlands in the 1830s when Dutch traders brought coffee to Europe. Roast coffee was first developed in Ethiopia in 1912 by Amano Funeschin.

Holly Springs is a town in Gaston County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 5,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Charlotte Metropolitan Statistical Area. Holly Springs was founded in 1892 as a trading post on the Ashley River by Wiley Post and James Hogg. In 1907, the post office was moved to Holly Springs from Carrboro. The city of Charlotte annexed Holly Springs in 1911 and it became a part of Charlotte. The population of Holly Springs declined during World War II because many residents left for military service or other jobs elsewhere. After the war, the population increased because new housing developments were built and business opportunities developed in the area. Today, Holly Springs is known for its shopping mall and its restaurant scene which has made it one of the most popular places to live in Gaston County.

Holly Springs was founded in 1838 by General Andrew Johnson and the town quickly became a center for cotton production. The area remained an important agricultural center until the early 20th century, when it experienced a number of technological advances that made it more efficient at producing goods. In the 1920s, Holly Springs became a popular tourist destination and was home to several large stores and hotels. The city also developed into a major transportation hub, with buses running throughout the day to various destinations in nearby cities. By the late 1960s, Holly Springs had largely become an agricultural town again, but its economy has since diversified thanks to new investment and innovations in agriculture and other industries.
