Holly Springs is a town in Union County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 8,542 at the 2010 census. Holly Springs is part of the Asheville-Carmarthen-Dorchester Combined Statistical Area. The community has been called "the best place to live in America" by numerous publications and it is known for its friendly people, stunning scenery, and beautiful architecture. The area that now Holly Springs was first settled by European Americans in 1819 as Tryonville after General James Johnston's retreat from Battle of Eutaw Creek. At that time Tryonville was part of Randolph County and the surrounding land including present-day Holly Springs was included in Dinwiddie County. American Revolutionary War veteran William Abercrombie bought some of the original land here in 1794 and named it after his plantation near modern day Raleigh, North Carolina - Abercrombieowne. A post office called Tryonville was established in 1819, and served until 1827 when it moved to what is now Rutherford County. In 1828 a public school was started there which became an elementary school with grades one through twelve on December 1st, 1830; three years later it became an high school with nine grades under one roof which operated until 1886 when it became known as Patton School District No. 2 High School (now Appalachian Community College). In 1865 local businessman John Blythe donated 640 acres (2 km²) of lands located east of town between Brittania Road on the south bank of Roanoke River and US 6 on the north side to be used for developing a new city – Holly Springs –named after him only four years later following his death at age seventy-eight during Reconstruction plans championed by Governor Prentiss Smithson Jr.. plantings began on this gift late into 1865 but no formal plan or development occurred until early 1870s due to lack of available capital resources at that time…due largely to economic factors such as rustling cattle by Native Americans who controlled much interiorland then being developed oil shale fields recently leased from Confederate soldiers during Reconstruction days many pioneer families left their homes behind seeking opportunities elsewhere during these difficult times…officially settlers had arrived here circa February 12th 1870 when steamboat Lady Esther anchored off Robertson’s Landing offering passage for those arriving via riverboatsriver access becoming open most weekends beginning October 3rd 1870 making travel much more feasible for newcomers however not everyone chose to move permanently soon many simply took advantage of all offers made good by officials allowing plenty of time for applications and qualifications before visas were issued enabling mass migration without fear or inconvenience….many residents did arrive permanently despite limited supplies initially resulting from difficulties accessing essential transportation items like water barrels & mills needed to support village growth also shortages caused large outflow rates vis-à-vis adjacent communities creating civil unrest potential conflicts over food sources troops stationed nearby while supplies improved giving residents breathing room eventually creating cooperative spirit among earliest inhabitants today’s village remains almost entirely unaltered physical evidence remaining today including rich agricultural soils still rich blue flag wildflowers growing right next door

The area became an important manufacturing center during the early 20th century and Holly Springs was one of the most important cities in the region. After World War I, Holly Springs experienced rapid growth as a result of its status as a post-war boomtown. However, during the 1930s and 1940s, Holly Springs suffered from economic decline and social strife. In 1948, after years of effort by local officials, Holly Springs was chosen asthe capital of newly created Cherokee County. In 1990, following efforts to revitalize the city and promote tourism, Holly Springis designated as an UNESCO World Heritage Site for its significant cultural heritage.
Holly Springs was founded in 1784 by Colonel John Holly and his wife, Sarah. The town was named after the Holly family's plantation in North Carolina. The Holly family operated a cotton plantation for many years. In 1838, Colonel John Holly died and bequeathed his land to the State of North Carolina. In 1888, Governor John Broughton designated Holly Springs as a state fairgrounds and tourist destination.
