McCullough, who became the first owners of a grocery store on Patton Avenue. They sold roasted coffee beans from their business and also served refreshments such as hot chocolate and ice cream. In 1905, Mr. Aiken founded the first Roastery in west Charlotte, NC, which became one of the leading roasters in the area. In 1916, Giese Brothers Coffee Company was established in downtown Hope Mills with George Giese as its owner and president. The company operated until it merged with Peet's Coffee (now Starbucks) in 1984. In 1919, Clarence King started brewing his own coffee at his home on Davis Street near Vance College after purchasing a large quantity of European-style roasted beans from Italian traders based in Naples, Italy for use at his millinery business. King's Coffee Co., Inc., later changed its name to King Coffee Company and continued production until 1988 when it merged with Starbuck's Coffee Corporation to form Starbucks Corporation Zuckerbrottee Homebrewed Coffee Department). Two years later, King Brewing & Sales moved its operations out of town to new facilities on Patton Avenue in Raleigh where they remain today as part of Starbucks Corp.'s ground bean operation (the old locations are now open as retail stores). Hope Mills is a small town in North Carolina, located about 20 miles north of Raleigh. Hope Mills has a population of around 1,000 people and is the county seat for Wilson County. The name "Hope" comes from the community's namesake, George Washington Hope. George Washington Hope was instrumental in creating and leading the First Baptist Church in Hope Mills. Hope Mills began as an agricultural village with some 30 houses. In 1892, the first post office was established in the town and soon became known as a center for religious services and socializing. In 1925, when Wilson County was created, Hope Mills became its county seat. Today, Hope Mills is an important cultural and commercial center for Wilson County and its surrounding area. It is also home to two large shopping malls - one on University Road between Midtown Drive and Interstate 25/I-75 (the old I-85), and another on Pembroke Parkway between University Boulevard and US 401 (the old NC 78).

Hope Mills was founded in 1837 as a small Methodist church by Reverend James Finney. The original structure, which is still standing, was built on the site of what is now the Hope Mills Business District. A few years later, Reverend Finney and his wife moved to North Carolina and started a new church there. In 1852, they erected the first schoolhouse in North Carolina. It was named after Mrs. Finney’s parents, who had been murdered when they were pursuing Christianity in India. In 1861, President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, which ended slavery in all of America. This event forever changed Hope Mills and its residents. Immediately following Lincoln’s proclamation, many black Methodists relocated to Hope Mills from all over America to celebrate this important news and begin their new lives free from bondage. The community soon became known for its progressive policies and staunchly religious beliefs. In 1865, Reverend Finney organized the first African American Baptist Church in North Carolina – one of the earliest such churches in America. He also began working to integrate local schools into white society and create opportunities for African Americans throughout townspeople throughout his lifetime. During Reconstruction era (1868-1877), Hope Mills showed great support for black people during their efforts to gain full civil rights within American society. Notably, it helped establish several businesses that continue to operate today including Lionsgate Films LLC (www.lionsgatefilms) – a subsidiary of Time Warner Entertainment Company (www.) Hope Mills experienced significant growth during World War II as military personnel and their families relocated here en masse due to shortages of housing elsewhere in Northern America at that time Columbus Avenue was home to some of the most segregated neighborhoods in Charlotte County! The mills continued manufacturing munitions until 1958 when production shifted towards textiles; however textile production ceased altogether by 1973 due to changing technology and competition from better-funded Asian factories worldwide! Hope Mills has since become an important cultural center within its community with programs focused on creative writing/arts appreciation; musicology; social justice programming; environmental education; health/wellness programming; world religions/cultures classes; heritage tours/exhibitions.; culinary arts program & kitchen exhibits.; professional wrestling matches featuring popular NC wrestlers living & visiting town & more!
