The history of policemen in Hope Mills, North Carolina began with the founding of the Police Department on October 1, 1892. The department was made up of three officers and six men. The first officer to be hired was John Fenton. By 1907, there were twelve police officers in Hope Mills. In 1916, the department purchased a horse truck that could transport officers and equipment to different events or settlements. In 1928, the department built its own station house. The primary purpose of this building was to store equipment and provide office space for the police chief and councilors. In 1950, a new station house was constructed on State Highway 221 east of town. This building served as both the headquarters for the Hope Mills Police Department and also as a prison until it was closed in 1978 due to budget cuts. Hope Mills has had several Officers Killed in Action (OAA) throughout its history; one being Officer Bob Pinson who died while performing his duties as a policeman on December 3rd, 1951 when he responded to a disturbance at an animal shelter near where he currently resides at 123 Cedar Street. Since 1968, OAA has been held annually during National Policemen's Day which is celebrated on November 5th each year
