In 1886, Douglass Northrop made a small batch of coffee at his farm near Frederick MD which became known as Northrop's Coffee. In 1913, Dutchman Hendrik Jan van Rijn began brewing coffee at his factory on the IJsselmeer in Rotterdam using Arabica beans from Turkey and Egypt. This was followed by other brewers including Harry Johnson of Coca Cola fame (1921), Isidore Roche of Nestle SA (1925), and Ambrosiano SA of Italy (1927). By 1938 all major European breweries had their own brands of espresso or Colombian-style coffees roasted direct from the bean: Italian Elio Di Natale Brewing Co., Ltd., French Carrefour SA, Spanish Aguardiente y Toro SA, Belgian Koffie & Teas NL/BIAS/CSC de CVY de CVY et CIE de CVY et CIE du CVY; German Kappelhof AG; Dutch Tischlerijnen NV; Swedish AB InBev AB.) At this point international trade was complete with whole bean coffee being shipped all over the world! During World War II, coffee production increased due to war needs such as munitions factories and aircraft manufacturing plants. After the war ended, production decreased because of new technologies such as cold brew machines and single origin coffees becoming available. In 1963 Philips SE established its first Turkish café - Philips Cafe Rotterdam - which served Ethiopian-roasted coffee until it closed in 1994 after many years of service! Today there are over 100 different cafes worldwide that serve whole bean espresso or capsule coffees originating from various parts of the world.
