Huntersville is a town located in Duplin County, North Carolina. The population was 9,724 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Charlotte–Mecklenburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name of the town comes from Scots-Irish settlers who named their village "Huntersville" for John Hunter, a captain in British forces during the American Revolution. The first permanent European settlement in what is now Huntersville was founded by families of English and Welsh colonists who came to this area in 1734. They built a trading post on the east side of Duplin River and called it Newtown. In 1737, Colonel James Moore established a military post at what are now known as Main Street and University Avenue near where present-day Huntersville stands. This site became known as Moore's Fort after General James Moore's forces were stationed there during the war with France. In 1739, another group of English colonists arrived from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania and named their town "Huntersville." They built a small fort on land that now forms part of downtown Huntersville and conducted trade with Native Americans living hereabouts before settling down permanently. By 1740, several other settlements had been established around what is today Huntersville: Newbern on Yadkin River (now part of Winston-Salem), Beechwood on Catawba River (now part of Rockingham), White Oak Flat on Yadkin River (now in City Councilman Tyrone Woods' district), and Mebane on Catawba River (now part of Monroe). Huntersville is a town in Vance County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 5,703 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Durham–Chapel Hill metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Huntersville was John Milton who arrived in 1792. He and his family were farmers and traders. In 1824, William Pemberton built a mill on the site of present-day Pemberton Park to produce flour for local residents and merchants. Porter Mill followed in 1825 and Post Office Mills in 1827. The mills became known for their fine flour that was exported throughout the Southeast to sell under the name "Porter's Flour". In 1830, David Waddell erected a log cabin on what is now Waddell Road (later renamed Main Street). He started trading with Indians as well as making goods for settlers spread out through eastern Vance County. By 1840, Waddell had several stores and taverns operating along Main Street including Oneida Store which still stands today. In 1845, James Cushing platted land south of present-day junction of Old US 1 & I-95 and founded Cushing Landing on this new property which later became known as Huntersville proper. This landing served as an important staging ground during the American Civil War because it gave Confederate forces access to food supplies coming from Wilmington northward across NC 1A before reaching Hunterdon County proper via I-95W into Pennsylvania (now Delaware). After being besieged by Union forces at Danville below Cushing Landing on July 15th 1865 after withdrawing from western Virginia due to shortages of artillery ammunition caused by Confederate General Robert Ewell's Bridge crossing strategy near Petersburg Va., Confederate Generals Jubal Early & Averell Harbinger held out at Cushing Landing until relieved by Union troops under General Ulysses S Grant just prior to fall of Petersburg; thus ending with Battle Of Cushing Landing – one day before Fredericksburg Siege began

Huntersville became a major center for the production of lumber and other goods. In 1892, the town built its first school and library. In 1916, the town became a city and added more businesses to its list of assets. In 1968, Huntersville constructed its first hospital. Today, Hunter'sville is a thriving community with many cultural events happening each year.
