Huntersville is a city in North Carolina, United States. The population was 54,914 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Robertson County and the largest city in Robeson County. Huntersville is a town in Caldwell County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 9,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greensboro–Winston-Salem–High Point Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European colonists to arrive in what is now Caldwell County were planters who settled along the Yadkin River in 1772. By 1800, they had developed an agriculture and cattle ranching economy that supported a small community of about 150 people. The area came under pressure from slaveholders during the antebellum period; they increased their holdings through purchase and sale of slaves until 1861 when Union forces occupied Confederate-held territory west of Charlotte. The following year, Union General Robert E. Lee decided to retreat fromCharlotte and move his army northeast into Caldwell County to meet Johnston’s army entrenched at Durham Heights on the Yadkin River. When news reached Huntersville residents that General Lee was retreating, they gathered supplies and firearms and departed for Durham Heights as quickly as possible. In 1864, after Confederate troops evacuated Durham Heights, Union soldiers burned down the old courthouse which had been used as a military hospital for prisoners of war during the warring states period In 1892, two brothers named Gifford built a log cabin on what is now Main Street in downtown Huntersville while attending college near Raleigh. They became known as the Giffords because they contributed so much to developing the town – serving on its first Board of Commissioners, starting construction on its first schoolhouse (1896), donating land for city hall (1910), etc.– all while living primarily off their own income within one mile (1 km) of their home base where most people still live today In 1924 local businessman WF Hargrave donated approximately 1 acre (0.40 ha) southeast of downtown to become Courthouse Square which served as home to both municipal courtrooms and various businesses until it was replaced by City Hall in 1978 This square has hosted public events such as graduation ceremonies ever since including hosting Super Bowl XLI in 2006
