Indian Trail is a road in the United States that runs from Tennessee to North Carolina. The road has been in use for over 100 years and is one of the older roads in the United States. In 1814, when General James Ketchum and his army invaded Cherokee Nation, he discovered Indian Trails and decided to march north on it instead of south. The military found plenty of food sources along the way and did not encounter any hostile Native Americans until they reached eastern North Carolina in 1828. After reaching eastern North Carolina, Ketchum turned back and continued his invasion into Georgia. In 1829, Englishman John Lawson came across Indian Trails while exploring the area between Eastern North Carolina and South Alabama. He started trading with Native Americans along this route and soon realized that this path would be perfect for traders because of its length and easy access to resources such as waterfalls and mountains. Lawson built a road along Indian Trails as well as settlements at Blountstown (named after him) and Cartersville (which became known as Lawrencesville later). By 1830, traders were traveling up Indian Trails every day from Knoxville to Durham; some even going as far east as Augusta, Georgia! In 1837-38 Commodore Matthew Perry visited Eastern North Carolina during his blockade campaign against Mexico. When he reached Durham he ordered Admiral David Dixon to open up navigation on both Spanish Passageway (now called US 50) and Southern Beach Peninsula so Perry could bring supplies upriver rather than shipping via Mexican ports like Acapulco or San Diego Bay. This allowed American forces more direct access to food supplies needed for their war effort against Mexico City – an important victory for America! The following year saw another major milestone for Indians trails when Major General Andrew Johnson founded Fort Fisher near present day Wilmington, NC on May 15th 1840 under orders from President Polk; part of Johnson’s strategy to stop Mexican ambitions in the Southeast! Fort Fisher served as an important base of operations during Sherman’s devastating “Great Migration” which destroyed entire African American populations throughout America during the late 1800s; allowing white farmers access to these strategic properties which had been lost centuries earlier!
