The town was founded by white settlers in 1799 and named for the Trail of Tears, which ran through this area during the 1830s. Indian Trail developed as a cross-country wagon road connecting the Appalachian Mountains with South Carolina and Georgia. The railroad arrived in Indian Trail in 1852 and made it easier to trade goods between these states. The town became an important stop on the road and people from all over came to visit. In 1951, Indian Trail was incorporated as a town and has grown ever since. Today, Indian Trail is home to a variety of businesses including a bank, post office, grocery store, Tire Store/ Workshop, Toyota dealership, hotel/motel and several restaurants. The history of Indian Trail can be traced back to at least 1799 when white pioneersestablished the town here on what is now Pisgah County’s eastern border with South Carolina. During this time period there were many challenges faced by early settlers – such as difficult terrain that prevented travel eastward along present day I-85; Native American resistance to European colonization; hostile relations between whites andNative Americans;and Virginia’s numerous slave catchers who raided frontier settlements looking for slaves).
