As the United States and its military grew in power during the 1800s, so too did the need for a national guard. The creation of the national guard was an effort by President George Washington to provide security for the nation and to ensure that its citizens had access to important resources should they be needed. Initially, the national guard consisted of a small number of soldiers from each state. However, as America’s military shrank in size and power during the 19th century, it became necessary to create a larger force made up of soldiers from all over the country. In 1845, Congress passed an act establishing a National Guard Bureau within the War Department. This bureau would manage all federal troops stationed in different parts of America and would also provide funding for new units to be created. The first unit called “The North Carolina National Guard” was organized on July 1st, 1845. It consisted of about 25 men from North Carolina and was sent to escort General Andrew Jackson on his visit to Raleigh. The unit served primarily as bodyguards and transportation until December 9th when it was transferred back south to Georgia under orders from General John A Thomas. By 1865, there were over 5500 guards in existence across America! Of these units, only around 350 remained active into World War I due to various reasons such as budget cuts or changes in policy (e.g., end of American Civil War). Most guards disbanded after World War I due eitherto lack of volunteers or because their services were no longer needed following peace negotiations which ended with US victory over Germany in 1921-1923 Treaty of Trianon. However, some Guardsmen served in World War II including those who fought at Normandy ( June 1944 ), Rome ( September 1943 ), El Alamein ( May 1942 ), Operation Overlord ( August 1944 ) and Battle of Okinawa ( April 1945 ).

The Civil War began when Confederate forces attacked Union troops near Indian Trail. This caused a great deal of destruction and loss of life on both sides of the battle. After the war, Indian Trail became a vital artery for traffic in eastern North Carolina. Today, Indian Trail is still used primarily for transportation but it has also become a popular tourist spot due to its beauty and history. visitors can visit various sites along the road such as churches, mills, plantations, and homes dating back to before European settlement even began in this area!
