Jacksonville, North Carolina is a town in Duplin County, North Carolina. It was founded in 1837. Jacksonville is the county seat of Duplin County. The population was 1,569 at the 2010 census. The first settlers to Jacksonville were some of the first people to come ashore on what is now Jacksonville Beach following the American Revolution. They were farmers and traders who came down from Charlotte and other parts of North Carolina with supplies and provisions for the war effort. The town was platted in 1837 by JF Hebert and his brother James Hebert. In 1840, Captain John Gist built a small fort near present-day Commerce Street as part of an attempt to protect Jacksonville from pirates that had been terrorizing the area for years previous. The fort served as a refuge for local farmers during times of pirate activity and also became known as Gist's Fort because it housed both civilian and military personnel during this time period. In 1851, James Buchanan Polk became President of the United States and ordered General Winfield Scott to prosecute the Mexican–American War on U.S soil instead of returning home to campaign for reelection like he had planned before he took office. This decision did not sit well with many Americans who saw Mexico as their natural ally against Mexico's efforts to unify all South America under one banner so they could gain control over much of Central America proper including most importantly Texas (which then belonged to Mexico). As a result, violence erupted throughout South Texas between pro-American Mexicans loyal to Scott versus Mexican guerrillas loyal to rebel leader Antonio López de Santa Anna whose goal was nothing less than independence for all Latin American countries combined rather than just southwestern Texas which they considered their homeland after centuries of Spanish rule thereabouts}. After six months of combat, General Scott withdrew his forces from Texas effective February 14th 1853 due primarily to lack supplies and political instability in those areas aftermaths>.
