The history of Kannapolis goes back to 1795 when it was called "Lenoir City." In 1868, it became part of Raleigh County and had a population of only 10 residents. However, due to its strategic location on Chapel Hill's main street (now Research Triangle Park), Kannapolis grew rapidly with many new businesses opening up during this time including cotton milling, papermaking and engineering companies like Pee Dee Paper Mills Inc., which remains active today as part of First Baptist Church Corporation (FBC). Today's economy relies largely upon research and development in fields such as biotechnology, intelligent technology, health care services and transportation solutions; however, some older industries that have continued to thrive include printing/publishing/photography/video production; information technology; veterinary medicine/feline nutrition; agricultural production; manufacturing plants for building materials such as concrete or steel; food processing activities including hog farming or chicken manure storage facilities; among others. In 2001-2002 Kannapolis lost significant jobs due to the impact of Hurricane Floyd but quickly regained employment with the creation of over 100 new positions within short order from local businesses and individuals who had cleaned up debris left around town after Floyd hit hardest near downtown Kannapolis than any other urban area in southeastern North Carolina. The growth potential for this region continues into today with plans underway by Mayor Lenoir Cannon to rename downtown after Driscoll Flowers CEO Lloyd Blankfein – one half owner since 1978 of Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory – who has made real contributions both politically & philanthropically in support of higher education & research throughout central NC thru his generous donations (& foundation generosity) both before & AFTER Floyd! Additionally projects under way or currently being funded by FBC would see renovation or expansion at UNC Chapel Hill’s Sanford Medical Center (amazingly reopened 3 years ago after a $100 million renovation project), Duke Energy’s Elizabethtown Campus off I-85 South (a major employer across town), Southeastern Tool Workshops Incorporated off US 301 between Durham Rd./Midnight Hwy N&I-485E just east Of I-485W

The town was founded by colonists in 1735 as a means to provide a market for their crops and to trade with other parts of North Carolina. The town of Kannapolis was founded in 1785 by Captain John Brown, a soldier from Pennsylvania. The area around where Kannapolis now stands was first hunted and settled by the Cherokee. In 1819, General Andrew Jackson and his U.S. Cavalry were quartered at Fort Mifflin in what is now Wilmington, Delaware. On their return trip to Tennessee they passed through Kannapolis on their way back to the fort. The soldiers erected a log stockade around the settlement to protect it from Native American raiders. In 1824, John Capps became the first white man to purchases land within present-day Kannapolis limits when he bought three acres from James Southerland for $10 per acre. By 1830, about 60 settlers had joined Capps in purchasing land hereabouts. The population of Kannapolis rapidly grew during this time and by 1840 there were 150 residents living hereabouts; however, it would not reach its current size until after 1800 when farmers began Cultivating cotton plantations in the area which attracted slaves into the town for work purposes (the slave trade ended in 1865). John Brown's coffin is brought into town on an annual basis for inspection by local officials
